What's New With Big Ed Brady

Posted 9/1/2010

Ed Brady.jpg Hi Friends, Do you like to go out to eat?  Mrs. Brady and I go "out to eat" every week (on our weekly date).  We all like great restaurants, but want to avoid "Failing" Restaurants, right?

Here are some "tips" for you to enjoy (below).

See you at the MN State Fair this Sat. Noon-5pm and Sun. 2-5pm (after Church).
God bless you,
Big Ed Brady

Know the Signs of a 'Failing' Restaurant
?If you've worked in the restaurant business, you probably know how volatile it can be. Restaurants come and go as quickly as you can say "cuisine nouveau." To stay in this industry, it's important to recognize the telltale signs associated with restaurants past their prime. Take heed of these indicators before it's too late, and then use the following tips to move on if necessary.

The Signs

A number of signs indicate a restaurant is struggling to keep its doors open, says former waitress Barbara Cohen of Nanuet, New York.

"You know trouble is brewing in the restaurant when you have one busboy working the dining room instead of three, or if the cook gets fired and the owner takes over the shift indefinitely," she explains. "This usually means there is a good chance there isn't enough money to properly staff the restaurant."

Dan King, principal of Boston-based Career Planning and Management, agrees, adding, "Look closely at turnover, particularly that of wait staff members, since they rely mostly on tips." Other indications of a failing restaurant, he says, are:

  • Managers/owners don't express passion for the business.
  • Menu choices are outdated/unchanging.
  • The number of regular menu items, as well as glassware/silverware, is shrinking.
  • Managers are cutting corners to stretch food ingredients.
  • The restaurant begins to close earlier.
  • Regular customers come in less frequently.
If you are a server, your tips are directly dependent on the quality of food and service; if both aren't in your favor, your earnings likely will plummet. "If you are no longer able to make the money you deserve, it's time to move on," Cohen says.

Ease Your Way Out

Cohen points out that loyalty makes it hard for some workers to leave a restaurant. If you feel loyal to the owner but realize the restaurant is losing momentum, scale back the number of shifts you work and pick them up elsewhere, she suggests.

"If you decide to stay, you will need to focus on your job and tune out the negativity around you," Cohen advises. "Your pay is based on presenting a pleasant experience, which may not be easy to do given the circumstances."

King says that if you stay until the bitter end, you will only postpone the inevitable -- unemployment. He suggests putting together a contingency plan. Ask yourself: "What would I do if I were to lose my job? Where would I like to go?" Use the opportunity to improve yourself and your work environment, King says.

Move On Successfully

"When looking for a new job, refrain from discussing the financial shape of your current employer," Cohen says. "Simply tell potential employers that you are looking for a different atmosphere."

When
interviewing
, says King, focus on your performance during "the good times" at the restaurant. "Demonstrate that you were glad that you were able to contribute to a positive venture and can do so again," he adds. "As in any occupation, you need to always be alert to changes in the field. Your skills don't diminish just because the restaurant failed; they stay with you."

How to "Sell Yourself" in just a few words...
Posted 8/25/2010

Want a Loan? A Sale? A Job?  - Hope this helps you.  Ed Brady, BOB-FM

By Barbara Findlay Schenck

When Brad Newman introduced himself as an actrepreneur, I was hooked. Everything about his title told me he had information I wanted to hear. Over a few additional seconds, I learned that this actor and entrepreneur is the founder of Zentainment, "a socially conscious media company committed to growing brands that encourage you to dream big and live a sustainable life." From there, a longer conversation  and a business relationship  followed, all spurred by an attention-getting introduction that took just moments to deliver.

The elevator pitch rides into the speed-dating era
Today's economic environment has turned job fairs, trade shows, networking events and even sidewalk sales into buyers' markets where only those with quick, compelling pitches survive.

In the 1990s, high-tech entrepreneurs named these short spiels "elevator pitches" because they could be conveyed during an elevator ride. The tech bubble ballooned and burst (and ballooned again), but elevator pitches are here to stay. Everyone  whether seeking employment, sales or profitable business associations  needs one.

Is your introduction ready to roll?
"So, what do you do?"

Those five words are on the minds of everyone you meet, whether in person or online. Brad Newman's introduction helps provide a formula that can assist you in preparing your answer and attracting attention from those you aim to impress:

Describe yourself in five words or less. Use a distinctive title or phrase that makes people think, "This sounds interesting" or "This is what I'm looking for." Consider the difference between "I'm a copywriter" and "I turn browsers into buyers." Or, in Newman's case, between "social media entrepreneur" and "actrepreneur."

Explain what you do in one sentence. After introducing yourself, introduce your offerings. "Our name combines the words Zen and entertainment, which stakes out our media space," Newman says. "We're a media company that focuses on socially conscious content. That definition tells what Zentainment is and rules out what it isn't." Work on a similarly specific description for your business.

Define your target audience. "Our market is comprised of 30- to 49-year-olds who care about socially conscious living," Newman says. "By defining our market in that way, people immediately know whether our business is for them." In other words, Zentainment isn't trying to be all things to all people. It's focused on a specific target audience, which is a key to success in today's crowded business environment.

Communicate your vision. "We're committed to growing brands that encourage you to dream big and live a sustainable life, whether they're our own brands or ones for which we consult and serve as producers," Newman says. "Our vision is clear enough to keep us focused and broad enough to make us adaptive to the opportunities of a changing market and media world." It's also compelling enough to attract a growing contingent of Zentainment consumers and business clients. What does your business stand for? What attracts your customers and their loyalty? Your answers can serve as a magnet for growth.

Practice, practice, practice. Create a script that conveys who you are, what you offer, your market, and the distinctive benefits you provide. Edit until you can introduce yourself and your business in less than a minute, which is how long most prospects will give you to win their interest.

Shrink your introduction even further so you can tell your story in 20 words or less. That's how much space you have in most marketing materials and online presentations, whether on your own site, on social media sites, or on sites that link to your home page. If you're thinking, "Twenty words? You've got to be kidding," scroll back to the start of this column. That's exactly what Brad Newman used to get my interest.

Top 10 Annoying Habits at Work Hi friends, I thought this might be helpful to you.
Thanks, BIG Ed Brady, BOB-FM Radio
====================================================

Top 10 Annoying Habits at Work

?

A big part of many jobs is to collaborate effectively with others. That's tough to do if your colleagues and supervisors find you irritating. And it's easier than you might think to rub people the wrong way, even when you're sitting at your desk minding your own business.

Jen Star of The Jennifer Group, a New York City-based recruiting firm that specializes in placing and maintaining support staff, cites 10 surefire ways to become a workplace annoyance:

1. You're Unprepared

"Showing up for meetings, interviews or arranged work sessions without the equipment or data that you need demonstrates a lack of respect for your coworkers and yourself," Star says. "And it wastes time. Get off on the right foot, and make like a scout and be prepared."

2. You're Not a Team Player

"You have to be willing to pitch in when another member of the team needs help," Star says. "There's nothing more annoying than watching somebody do a crossword puzzle while you're buried in work." And if a coworker needs a little time off to run an important errand, be flexible and help out when you can, she suggests.

3. You're Not Self-Reliant

Ask for help only when you really need it. "Giving up on the paper jam after only one try and expecting a coworker to fix it because you know she can does not contribute to good team spirit," Star says. Try everything you can to solve your own problem before involving somebody else.

4. You, Umm, Smell

Your scent is important, especially when you're working in a small, poorly ventilated space with lots of other people around. Be considerate of your neighbors by taking care not to generate strong smells that will permeate their space.

For instance, don't eat eggs or onions in the office, Star suggests. And if you smoke, be sure you air yourself out before you walk back in the office. The same goes for colognes. "Fragrance is a very personal choice, so it should be reserved for those who are close to you, not 20 yards away," she says.

5. You're Loud on the Phone

Loud telephone conversations can be offensive to your neighbors, so try to keep your voice low and even. And keep personal calls short. "Phone fights or, worse yet, phone foreplay can really drive one up a wall after a certain point," Star says. "Remember that you are not in your living room."

6. You're Unhealthy

If you're sick, stay home. If you have the sniffles or must come in, cover your mouth and do whatever you can to avoid infecting your coworkers.

7. You Walk Like an Elephant

Try to move around the office quietly to avoid disturbing the people around you. And if you must speak to another colleague, keep your voice down.

8. Your Cellphone Is Always On

Unless absolutely necessary, cellphones should be turned off while you're in the office. If you need to keep your phone on, use a soft or silent ringer or vibrate mode.

9. Your Computer Volume Is Blasting

Nobody wants to hear somebody else's bells and whistles when they're trying to concentrate.

10. You Shake Hands Like a Fish and Avoid Eye Contact

"When somebody won't look me in the eye or give me some energy in their handshake, I feel like they're avoiding me or snubbing me in some way," Star says. "I like a
firm handshake and a friendly smile."

Allow me to add one more: 11: Pray for your Employer and fellow employees daily.  Prayer works and the entire atmosphere at work will be better if it is wrapped in your prayers every day.
God bless you, Pastor Ed Brady, BOB-FM and Spirit FM.

The Best Back-to-School Laptops

By Brian Caulfield, Forbes.com
Student with Laptop

Twenty years ago, bringing a computer to school meant something luggable at best. A decade ago, students faced a tradeoff: a computer they could tote to classes or a more capable, powerful machine for the dorm room. Now, by contrast, it's easy to find a powerful notebook for under $1,000. Too bad the price of tuition hasn't gone down.

The Best Back-to-School Laptops

Macbook Laptop
Apple MacBook

MacBook

Price: $849 and up

Weight: 5 pounds

Thickness: 1.08 inches

Apple's entry-level notebook is a lot costlier than other companies' cheapest laptops--and it's also a whole lot more capable. You're never going to wonder if this machine is able to tackle the tasks a modern laptop is expected to handle, from editing multimedia clips to crunching numbers and putting together classroom presentations. If you can't decide on a laptop, get this one.

Price: $1,529 and up

Weight: 5.6 pounds

Thickness: 0.95 inches

Apple has packed a burly Intel Core i5 processor, a powerful Nvidia graphics chip and a big honking battery into this machine's aluminum shell. The 15-inch display is gorgeous. If you must pay more than $1,500 for a machine that weighs more than 5 pounds, this is the way to go First Class.

Dell Inspiron 15 Laptop

Dell Inspiron 15

Price: $379 and up

Weight: 5.6 pounds

Thickness: 1.02 to 1.48 inches

For a laptop with a full-sized keyboard and a 15.6-inch display, the price on this machine is very nice. Don't be afraid to load up on options. Add a respectable Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB of random-access memory and a beefy 500 GB hard drive, and this machine can still be had for just $599.

HP Pavilion dm4t Laptop
HP Pavilion dm4t

HP Pavilion dm4t

Price: $729.99 and up

Weight: 4.4 pounds

Hewlett-Packard offers a bewildering array of notebook options. It's hard to go wrong with the HP Pavilion dm4t, however. It's not HP's cheapest thin-and-light model, but it packs plenty of power and value into a machine that weighs 4.4 pounds and is less than an inch thick. Specify a model with Intel's 2.26 GHz Core i5-430M Dual Core processor, 4 GB of random access memory, a 500 GB hard drive and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5450 graphics card, and you'll still pay just $908.99.

Asus U30Jc

Asus U30Jc

Price: $849.99 and up

Weight: 4.8 pounds

Thickness: 1.2 inches

You'll pay more, both in money and weight, for a notebook that can play the latest videogames. This laptop, however, keeps the cost of putting some gaming action onto its 13-inch screen surprisingly low. Intel's Core i3-350M processor packs a decent amount of power into this relatively small machine. The real magic, however, is this machine can turn its Nvidia discrete graphics processor on for a bit of gaming and turn off the rest of the time, conserving battery life.

HP Mini 311Netbook
HP Mini 311

HP Mini 311 Netbook

Price: $359 and up

Weight: 3.26 pounds

Thickness: 1.2 inches

It's hard not to love netbooks. They're thin, they're light, they're cheap. The drawback: The cheaper options often lack real computing punch. The HP 311 offers a good deal more than you'll find on the cheapest netbooks. It packs a Nvidia Ion graphics chip along with Intel's Atom netbook processor, giving this notebook more oomph than a typical netbook. The 11.6-inch screen and bigger keyboard also makes this much more comfortable for regular use. This might be a good option for a student who is lugging a desktop computer to school with them, and wants something portable for the classroom.

Alienware m11x

Alienware m11x

Price: $799 and up

Weight: 4.4 pounds and up

Thickness: 1.29 inches

This machine packs a lot of power into a very portable device. The price for this 11-inch laptop is nice too. An Intel Core i5 CPU and zippy Nvidia graphics processor come standard. The biggest drawback? Do you really want your kid playing shoot-'em-up games during college lectures?

The
NFL Network and Fox Sports reported that Favre boarded a plane headed north on Tuesday afternoon. Three teammates, Jared Allen, Steve Hutchinson and Ryan Longwell, were absent from practice earlier in the day and went to Mississippi to recruit Favre.

By Chris McGrath, Getty Images
Fox Sports reported that Favre told his teammates that he is back in for another season. NFL Network also reported Favre would rejoin the Vikings.

Also, Favre's official website sent out an e-mail today saying, "Stay tuned for breaking news from the Minnesota Vikings today on Brett Favre's possible return." (via PFT)

The Vikings have not confirmed the news. Favre's agent, Bus Cook, has not returned messages from USA TODAY.

Favre's trip north comes exactly one year after news broke that he would emerge from retirement for the second year in a row and would sign with the Vikings.

His first season in Minnesota ended with a loss in the NFC title game in New Orleans. Favre, 40, then had surgery on his left ankle in May. He has said since then he couldn't commit to another year until he was satisfied his body could endure it.

==========
NFL.com Blogs

Even Favre’s site says to ‘stay tuned’

Now, this is a real Favre Watch. We’ve reached DEFCON 1.5.

And now for the latest hint that Brett Favre is returning: His official site, ?officialbrettfavre.com, is unavailable.

Presumably, this is because of overwhelming traffic after his message was posted: “Stay tuned for breaking news from the Minnesota Vikings today on Brett Favre’s possible return. Visit the Vikings.com and Officialbrettfavre.com for more information.”

I’m not lying when I say that NFL Network producers are currently engaged in a conversation as to whether the plane Favre is on is stealth, or trackable by radar. One of our news editors suggested hunter extraordinaire Jared Allen should have placed a tracking device on Favre during their reported meeting, you know, just in case. Did Allen, Steve Hutchinson and Ryan Longwell go The A-Team on Favre and drug his milk (copyright fantasy blogger Adam Rank), or was it more Old School style (you’re our boy, Blue, uh, I mean Brett) where they pulled up to the curb in a black van?

Lots of questions.

We really need to have a special red phone that rings only for Favre Watch. As always, stay with us at NFL.com for the latest.

CHAPTER ONE

I was born in Memphis, Tennessee on May 24, 1955, a month before my dad’s first record, “Cry, Cry, Cry,” was released on Sun Records.  My mother had only two dresses that fit her in late pregnancy, she told me, and in her final month, during the most summerlike of the sultry late spring days in East Memphis, she would sit on the steps of the front porch and eat an entire washbasin of cherry tomatoes. It was her one craving.  On the afternoon of May 24, my mother went to her regular appointment with her obstetrician, who examined her and told her to go straight to the hospital. “This baby is going to be born today,” he said. I was born after only four hours of labor, at eight o’clock that evening.  My mother later told me that the loneliest feeling she had ever felt was when she was wheeled through the double doors of the hospital maternity ward to give birth and looked back to see my dad standing forlornly in the waiting room. He paced and smoked for the next four hours while she labored alone and chewed on a wet washcloth when the pains overtook her; she always spoke with great resentment about the fact that she was given a damp washcloth to suck and then left alone in a hospital room.  She was awake for the entire four hours of labor and given nothing for pain, and then put to sleep for the actual birth. It all sounded like a mean-spirited, medieval exercise in physical endurance and emotional isolation. Her accounts of it were so cinematic and full of emotion that I grew up terrified of the prospect of childbirth.  I had very few fantasies about having children or being a mother, because I could not get past the specter of childbirth, which seemed almost a horrible end in itself, with something only vague and indefinable on the other side of it. The fact that I eventually did bear four children, delivered both “naturally” and with pain medication, never really lessened my fear.

When my mother went back for her six-week checkup after my birth, the doctor informed her that she was pregnant again.  My sister Kathy was born ten months and twenty-three days after me.  Kathy was a fragile child who had mysterious illnesses and the worst versions of every childhood disease, and I have always felt guilty that I may have taken all the nutrients out of my mother’s body when I inhabited her womb, just before Kathy’s arrival there.

Two years after Kathy’s birth, my sister Cindy was born, and soon after that we moved from Memphis to Southern California. My sister Tara was born shortly after we settled in Encino, in the San Fernando Valley. My mother’s fourth pregnancy and delivery were difficult for her. She carried Tara for ten months and endured a hard sixteen-hour labor. After the birth of her fourth daughter, my mother, in tears, informed my father that she was finished with childbearing, even though she had initially said she wanted six children. My father agreed, although he harbored a secret desire for a son, which he finally got when I was fifteen and he was married to June, not my mother.

My parents bought Johnny Carson’s house on Hayvenhurst Avenue in Encino.  My most vivid memory of the three years we lived there was of the day a film crew showed up in our living room to tape a show called Here’s Hollywood. My mother was extremely nervous, and we children were made to dress up in poufy dresses, white ankle socks, and black patent leather shoes, with our hair pulled tightly back into bows. We had to sit absolutely still and silent on the sofa next to my parents while the camera was trained on us and the interviewer spoke to them. Then we were sent outside while Mom and Dad were interviewed alone. The whole experience was profoundly unsettling to me. It may have been the first time that I registered – at age five – how it felt to be truly angry. I didn’t like how my mother changed for the camera, showing only a social veneer that didn’t represent her true self at all, and I didn’t like it that my dad had even allowed them in our house. I recognized the falsity, and silently rebelled against the intrusion. Thus began a lifelong wariness of journalists.

But I loved the house.

It had a pool and a big yard, and the room I shared with my sisters had Alice in Wonderland murals on the wall behind the twin beds.  We lived on the corner, with a school crossing in front of our house. Every morning and afternoon a crossing guard showed up in her car and waited for the school bus. As it arrived, she got out, slipped her plastic orange neon vest over her clothes, picked up her little stop sign, and positioned herself at the crosswalk to guide the children across the street.  This was the most fascinating ritual in the world to me, and the first few times I saw her I ran out to speak to her. She was very kind to me, but after several days, when my mother saw me actually get into the crossing guard’s car to talk to her, she forbade me to pay her any more visits. At age four, seriously disappointed and with great longing, I stationed myself in the picture window at the front of the house twice a day to observe her and the children from afar.  Part of the romance for me was the older children, for I badly wanted to go to school.

Sensing my frustration, my mother eventually enrolled me in a nursery school down the street for two or three days a week.  Although I enjoyed it, I discovered that it didn’t provide enough to satisfy my curiosity. I would ask my mother to read me every sign, every paper, every milk carton and package I saw. I insisted she tell me every word and what it meant, nearly driving her crazy in the process, and then I tried to memorize their spellings and meanings. On learning that Europe was a place across the ocean, I asked her if “European” was a real word.  She made a joke about going to the bathroom along the lines of “You’re peeing” and refused to say whether it was a real word which made me furious with her. She didn’t take my intense need to learn about language seriously, and I was desperate for someone who understood my hunger.  My dad would have understood, but he was gone much of the time, and during his recent visits home he had become strange, dark, and intensely distracted.  Although I’m not sure why, I didn’t go to kindergarten; bored senseless, I began to create imaginary friends, all of whom were adults.  Much later in life, a genial psychiatrist to whom I had confided this fact pointed out how unusual it was for a child to have adult imaginary friends, but it still seems perfectly natural to me.  I felt safe with them, and they taught me a great deal.  I still think of them fondly and I have a deep superstition about speaking their names aloud. They were my own personal crossing guards.

NOS ENERGY DRINK BEATERCROSS RETURNS TO ERX THIS THURSDAY
Twice the Cars, Twice the Chaos, Twice the Fun

If you missed the first ever NOS Energy Drink Beatercross race at ERX this past July, you most likely know by now that you missed one heckuva good time. Whether it was the hundreds of friends who shared a cold one on a perfect summer evening; the ridiculous jumps these would be salvage-yard cars and trucks were attempting; or simply the head to head, competitive racing, everyone left with big grins and a similar message, “I’ll be back!”

Now is the time to join them as the NOS Energy Drink Beatercross Series returns for Round 2 presented by Ziegler Cat, Thursday, August 12th at ERX. Nearly 40 cars are expected to participate in what can be best described as closed course rally car racing on a motocross track. With classes featuring compact cars and pickups in 4-cyclinder and 6-cylinder configurations, you’ll gain a new level of appreciation for those rusted, front wheel drive daily drivers when the green flag drops.

“Everyone had a great time,” said Chris Carlson, co-owner of the ERX facility. “Racers were telling me afterwards that it was the most fun they had in a long time and that they couldn’t wait for the next race. I think we can expect to see twice the cars for this next event.”

Similar to other forms of grassroots automobile racing, Beatercross features two heat races followed by cars being placed into an A main or B main final based upon their previous finishing order. A few new twists have also been added from the inaugural race, so racers will want to get registered and checked-in early. Joining the action on the track will be great food and drink courtesy of the Friendly Buffalo; NOS Energy Drink will be handing out free samples and giving away some cool prizes; intermission will feature the popular Parts Unlimited helmet toss for the kids along and an exhibition race featuring sport UTVs; and of course cool tunes and the family friendly atmosphere unique to ERX.

The racing action gets underway at 5:30pm, but racers can check-in anytime between 12 and 4pm. A mandatory drivers meeting will take place at 4:45pm with practice laps afterwards. All cars must pass a pre-race inspection checklist before they are allowed on the track. Race registration is just $30 when you pre-register or $40 at the gate. Spectators can take in all the action for just $10 for adults with children 12 and under admitted for free. Don’t miss round two of the NOS Energy Drink Beatercross race presented by Ziegler Cat at ERX this Thursday night!

MN - Tea Party >>State Tea Party Member Unhappy With Tea Party Congressional Caucus

(Undated) -- Some Tea Party members in Minnesota think the U.S. House is not the right place for a new Tea Party caucus. Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann is leading the group's first meeting Wednesday. Elaine Philippi [[ FILL-uh-pee ]] of Princeton says the Tea Party is supposed to be a separate grassroots movement.

Philippi says there's not much difference between the major political parties besides social issues which the Tea Party does not address. Bachmann claims the purpose of her new group is not to direct the Tea Party from Washington. Philippi is a member of the Mille Lacs County Tea Party.

Representative Michele Bachmann recruited a number of Republican lawmakers for the group's first meeting. And Elaine Philippi [[ FILL-uh-pee ]] of Princeton says there is enough blame to go around.

Oak Ridge Boys Score 2 Million 'Fancy Free' Spins on Radio
Posted 7/14/2010

The Oak Ridge Boys Score 2 Million 'Fancy Free' Spins on Radio

Oak Ridge Boys Chalk up another huge honor for the Oak Ridge Boys. Their 1981 chart-topping hit, 'Fancy Free,' has received a Two-Million Spins Award from BMI.

Some fancy trivia numbers: 'Fancy Free' has been broadcast over 116,000 hours, or 4,861 days, which translates into more than 13 years of continuous airplay!

"The greatest songwriters in Nashville have written the Oak Ridge Boys' career with master pieces," says lead singer
Duane Allen. "When I first heard 'Fancy Free,' I felt it was a hit just waiting to be recorded. We loved the song so much that we titled our biggest selling album by the same name. Thanks to Jimbeau Hinson and Roy August for writing this great hit, and congratulations to them for more than two million air plays on radio."

The Oak Ridge Boys, whose current lineup consists of Duane (who joined the Oaks in 1966), baritone
William Lee Golden (1965), tenor Joe Bonsall (1973) and bass Richard Sterban (1972), was founded in 1945 as a gospel group called the Oak Ridge Quartet. They changed direction in the mid '70s, crossing over to country and pop music with the release of their debut country album, 'Y'all Come Back Saloon.'

The Boys are still on a roll today. This month, they captured the No. 1 song on The Boot's
'Earworm Tunes: Top 10 Catchy Songs in Country' with their mega No. 1 hit (and signature song), 'Elvira.'

>>HCMC Replacing Hyperbaric Chamber

(Hennepin County, MN) -- Hennepin County Medical Center will build a new ten-million dollar hyperbaric oxygen chamber. The current chamber, built in 1963, is several blocks from the hospital. Dr. Cheryl Adkinson says building a new facility makes sense.

The chamber is best known for treating victims of carbon monoxide poisoning, but is used for many other conditions including serious infections.  For example, it can help treat diabetes side-effects and avoid amputation of limbs.

The chamber is probably best known for treating victims of carbon monoxide poisoning but Dr. Cheryl Adkinson says it's also used for treating other problems such as radiation injuries.

Pulpit Freedom Sunday 2010 - Pray for our Pastors & the U.S.A.
Posted 7/5/2010

Pulpit Freedom Sunday 2010

Pastors and churches are often confused about their right to speak truth from the pulpit on politicians and political issues. For 56 years, the IRS has wrongly attempted to silence pastors (the IRS code is over 3.4 million words long – almost five times longer than the Bible), and radical secularist groups such as Americans United for Separation of Church and State further attempt to intimidate churches and pastors into inaction.

Yet today, more than ever, a pastor's voice must be heard, and Biblical truth must be brought to bear on current issues, including those of candidates and elections. Pastors do have the right to speak Biblical truth from the pulpit without fear of censorship or punishment from the government. Alliance Defense Fund (ADF), a premier national legal group that defends the constitutional rights of Christians, has organized a concerted effort to push back against this unconstitutional government intrusion into the pulpit.

In 2008, ADF launched the Pulpit Initiative to protect the right of pastors to speak freely from the pulpit on any and all issues addressed by Scripture. That year, thirty-three pastors from twenty-two states participated in "Pulpit Freedom Sunday," addressing civil issues, candidates, and the upcoming elections from a Biblical perspective. In 2009, over eighty pastors from 30 states and the District of Columbia participated.

This year, Pulpit Freedom Sunday will take place on September 26, 2010. On that day, pastors from across the country will stand together to address the issue of candidates and elections from their pulpits.

Your church can help make Pulpit Freedom Sunday a great success. Please visit www.speakupmovement.org/church for more information about how you can get involved in Pulpit Freedom Sunday 2010, or call (800) TELL-ADF. ADF will stand with pastors to protect their constitutional rights from censorship or intimidation.

Daniel Webster rightly noted: "God grants liberty only to those who love it and are always ready to guard and defend it," and the freedom of the American pulpit is a liberty worth defending. We strongly encourage your church to contact ADF and let them know that you will participate in "Pulpit Freedom Sunday."

God Bless!

David Barton

Sending your kids or grandkids to Day Camp this summer?
Posted 6/29/2010

Save money on your taxes, if you keep your receipts for Tax time.

It could help your wallet to keep track of the cost of your kid's day camp. IRS spokesperson Carrie Resch says the Child and Dependent Care Credit is worth as much as 21-hundred dollars when you file your taxes next year.

Resch says the credit is only good for dependents under 13-years of age. Overnight camps don't qualify.

There's more information at IRS.gov.

BEATERCROSS IS FINALLY HERE - THIS THURSDAY
Opening Round of the NOS Energy Drink Beater-X Series is This Thursday at 5:30pm

With registrations stacking up at ERX central, and final track preparations in the works, just days remain until the open round of the NOS Energy Drink Beatercross Series kicks-off the most bizarre and sure to be entertaining type of auto racing you’ve ever seen. Beatercross is dirt track terrain racing for compact cars and trucks, featuring stripped down four and six cylinder vehicles competing side by side on a motocross type track.

Continuing with their focus on family fun, ERX promoters adopted the Beatercross idea after learning of its success during a central Minnesota county fair last summer. “The idea is rather simple,” said Chris Carlson, co-owner of the ERX facility. “The cars are affordable, the racing should be extremely entertaining and the ERX venue is the perfect place to put it all together. We already have nearly 20 entries, and we expect at least that many more to register at the gate.”

The racing action gets underway at 5:30pm, but racers can check-in anytime between 12 and 4pm. A mandatory drivers meeting will take place at 4:45pm with practice laps afterwards. All cars must pass a pre-race inspection checklist before they are allowed on the track. Race registration is just $30, while spectators can take in all the action for just $10 for adults with children 12 and under admitted for free. Don’t miss the first ever NOS Energy Drink Beatercross race at ERX this Thursday night!

Open motocross practice on a slightly revised track will continue at ERX every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. However open practice will not be offered Thursday August 12th and the 26th due to rounds two and three of the NOS Energy Beatercross Series.
With that in mind, ERX will offer three additional practice dates during the month of August on Wednesday nights, August 11, 18 and the 25th from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. Mark your calendars and we’ll see you at ERX this summer.

Scheduled for July 19-23 at the Trax North motocross facility (www.traxnorth.com) in North Crosby, Minnesota, the experience brings together the action intensity of motocross with its’ high profile athletes and their stories of integrity, leadership, respect and faith.

CoffeeDoes it ever feel like you have to spend hours and hours at the gym, change your diet dramatically or jump way out of your comfort zone to reap any rewards in the health department? Think again. Our experts say that these small changes can have significant health payoffs.

1. Floss more often.

According to Robert Emami, DDS, chief of staff at Dental Specialties, a multispecialty practice in Randolph, Massachusetts, a simple piece of nylon string can have dramatic effects on a woman's overall health. “Flossing is one of the easiest, quickest ways to remove bad bacteria from your body,” he says. “Plaque and bacteria are constantly building up in areas of the teeth that brushing does not get to. If plaque accumulates, it eats away the bone that holds the teeth in place.” Oral bacteria, he adds, can enter the bloodstream; studies have shown that such harmful bugs could exacerbate diabetes and hypertension, and even lead to premature births.

2. Eat every 2 to 3 hours during the day.

Think you’re a saint for going on a long hunger strike at work? If you’re imagining thinner thighs as a result, don’t. You’re likely making your metabolism crazy, says Dallas-based fitness trainer Scott Colby, and possibly setting yourself up to eat more later in the day. Colby encourages women to eat when they’re hungry, which often translates to three meals and at least two snacks per day. “This will help keep you full and satisfied and will reduce the likelihood of binge eating at the end of the day,” he says. “This is one of the best principles you can follow to blast fat and build sexy, lean muscle.”

MORE FROM WOMAN’S DAY

3. Make your coffee at home.

If a trip to Starbucks is as much of a morning ritual as showering and blow-drying your hair, you might find this advice crazy, but health experts like Gregory J.E. Ladas, author of the book The Couch Potato Diet, say it will not only save you money but possibly hundreds of calories. When you brew your java at home, you “avoid the unhealthy temptations at coffee shops like doughnuts,” he says. And who hasn’t fallen for a sprinkle donut or a piece of fat- and calorie-laden pumpkin loaf?

4. Wear a pedometer.

Boston-based personal trainer Helena Collins calls the affordable little pedometer “the most effective fitness tool known to man”—or woman. “Becoming aware of how much you move is such motivation to move more,” she says. “Not only for you, but for your whole family. Kids love pedometers—it becomes a family challenge about movement, not exercise.” It also may be fun to track how active (or inactive) you are each day. For starters, 2,000 steps is the equivalent of one mile. To boost your physical and mental health, wear a pedometer and challenge yourself to increase your steps every day.

5. Sleep in your exercise clothes (comfortable ones).

Do you always intend to get up and go for a jog or log an hour at the gym before work but…don’t? Motivation may be your problem, and if so, Nicole Glor, an AFAA-certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor at Crunch in New York City, says that she gives her clients some unusual advice that works. “Sleep in your gym clothes and put your sneaks and sports bra by the bed,” she says. “Many of us waste too much time saying we need to work out but dread the process. Trick yourself by just getting dressed for it and not really thinking about the next step.”

6. Do your Kegels.

Experts say that as many as 1 in 4 women over the age of 18 experience episodes of involuntary leaking urine, called urinary incontinence. It’s embarrassing and frightening, but there is something you can do about it, say experts: Keep your pelvic floor muscles strong. According to a review of studies by The Cochrane Library, the pelvic-floor strengthening exercises known as Kegels were found to be an effective way to minimize urinary incontinence issues. Proof: Women who did their Kegels were between 2.5 and 7 times more likely to experience improvement than those who did not do the exercises.

Need a quick refresher course on how to do Kegels? First, to figure out which muscles need flexing, some experts suggest women insert a tampon or a clean finger into their vagina and then try to close their vaginal muscles around it. Contract these pelvic muscles and hold for about 3 seconds; repeat 10 times. Do these as often as you like, and anywhere you like—no one will know.

7. Give yourself a compliment.

The key to feeling happy, confident and proud of your body—flaws and all? According to Stacey Rosenfeld, PhD, a New York-based psychologist who specializes in issues of anxiety, depression, eating disorders and body image, the best thing you can do for yourself is to learn how to marvel at your body’s many abilities. “Focus on what your body can do, rather than on how it looks,” she says. “Too often, we pay attention to how our bodies appear, rather than what they allow us to do. Can your body dance or swim? Can you build sand castles at the beach with your kids? Does your body allow you to enjoy a hot bath or intimacy with a partner? Does your body transport you down the block or up a mountain?” Try this exercise: “Identify what you like about your body,” she says. “See if you can find 10 things you like about how you look, like the sparkle in your eyes, the strength of your calves or your hair.”

8. Get your vitamin D levels checked.

Next time you’re at the doctor’s office, request a simple blood test to evaluate your vitamin D blood levels, suggests Doreen Orion, MD, a physician in private practice in Boulder, Colorado, and the author of the memoir Queen of the Road. “We're finding that many, many women have a low level of this essential vitamin,” she says. “Low levels are correlated with all sorts of things from cancers to low energy to Alzheimer's. I've had patients who are outside all day, who still have very low levels. The fix is simple and just involves taking vitamin D for several months, then rechecking the level.”

9. Switch from instant to steel-cut oats.

If you eat oatmeal in the morning, give yourself some bonus points. The breakfast of champions, oatmeal fills you up and helps you feel satisfied longer than most breakfasts. But, to get the maximum health payoff, consider switching to steel-cut oats, says Jill Nussinow, MS, RD, a registered dietitian and the author of The Veggie Queen. “Steel-cut oats are less processed, contain more fiber and are more satisfying,” she says. “Make them in the slow cooker overnight or quickly in the pressure cooker in 5 minutes in the morning.”

10. Turn on some peaceful music at dinner.

“We tend to mimic the pace of the music we’re listening to,” explains David Niven, PhD, author of The 100 Simple Secrets of Healthy People. “To keep yourself from eating too fast—and too much—put on some slow music.” He cites a research study that found people who listened to fast music with meals ate, on average, five bites per minute. Those who didn’t listen to music ate four bites per minute. And the kicker: Those who listened to slow music ate just three bites per minute.

Flag Day (United States)

If you and I don't fly the flag and protect this freedom to fly the flag, who will?
Let's teach the children to honor this great nation.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened that day by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777.[1]

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.

Flag Day is not an official federal holiday, though on June 14, 1937, Pennsylvania became the first (and only) U.S. state to celebrate Flag Day as a state holiday, beginning in the town of Rennerdale.[1] Title 36 of the United States Code, Subtitle I, Part A, CHAPTER 1, § 110[2] is the official statute on Flag Day; however, it is at the President's discretion to proclaim officially the observance.

One of the longest-running Flag Day parades is held annually in Quincy, Massachusetts, which began in 1952, celebrating its 59th year in 2010.[3] The 59th Annual Appleton Wisconsin 2009 Flag Day Parade featured the U.S. Navy. The largest Flag Day parade is held annually in Troy, New York, which bases its parade on the Quincy parade and typically draws 50,000 spectators.[1][4]

Perhaps the oldest continuing Flag Day parade is at Fairfield WA (scroll down to list at #4). Beginning in 1909 or 1910, Fairfield has held a parade every year since, with the possible exception of 1918, and will celebrate the "Centennial" parade in 2010, along with some other commemorative events.

Several people and/or organizations played instrumental roles in the establishment of a national Flag Day celebration. They are identified here in chronological order.

[edit] 1861, George Morris

The earliest reference to the suggestion of a "Flag Day" is cited in Kansas: a Cyclopedia of State History, published by Standard Publishing Company of Chicago in 1912. It credits George Morris of Hartford, Connecticut:

To George Morris of Hartford, Conn., is popularly given the credit of suggesting "Flag Day," the occasion being in honor of the adoption of the American flag on June 14, 1777. The city of Hartford observed the day in 1861, carrying out a program of a patriotic order, praying for the success of the Federal arms and the preservation of the Union.

The observance apparently did not become a tradition.[1]

[edit] 1885, Bernard J. Cigrand

Stony Hill School, in Waubeka, Wisconsin, the site of the first formal observance of Flag Day

Working as a grade school teacher in Waubeka, Wisconsin, in 1885, Bernard J. Cigrand held the first recognized formal observance of Flag Day at the Stony Hill School. The school has been restored, and a bust of Cigrand also honors him at the National Flag Day Americanism Center in Waubeka.[5]

From the late 1880s on, Cigrand spoke around the country promoting patriotism, respect for the flag, and the need for the annual observance of a flag day on June 14, the day in 1777 that the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes.[1][6]

He moved to Chicago to attend dental school and, in June 1886, first publicly proposed an annual observance of the birth of the United States flag in an article titled "The Fourteenth of June," published in the Chicago Argus newspaper. In June 1888, Cigrand advocated establishing the holiday in a speech before the "Sons of America," a Chicago group. The organization founded a magazine, American Standard, in order to promote reverence for American emblems. Cigrand was appointed editor-in-chief and wrote articles in the magazine as well as in other magazines and newspapers to promote the holiday.

On the third Saturday in June 1894, a public school children’s celebration of Flag Day took place in Chicago at Douglas, Garfield, Humboldt, Lincoln, and Washington Parks. More than 300,000 children participated, and the celebration was repeated the next year.[6]

Cigrand became president of the American Flag Day Association and later of the National Flag Day Society, which allowed him to promote his cause with organizational backing. Cigrand once noted he had given 2,188 speeches on patriotism and the flag.

Cigrand lived in Batavia, Illinois, from 1913–1932.[7]

Cigrand generally is credited with being the "Father of Flag Day," with the Chicago Tribune noting that he "almost singlehandedly" established the holiday.

[edit] 1888, William T. Kerr

William T. Kerr, a resident of Collier Township, Pennsylvania, for a number of years, founded the American Flag Day Association of Western Pennsylvania in 1888, and became that organization's national chairman one year later, serving as such for fifty years. He attended President Harry S. Truman's 1949 signing of the Act of Congress that formally established the observance.

[edit] 1889, George Bolch

In 1889, the principal of a free kindergarten, George Bolch, celebrated the Revolution and celebrated Flag Day, as well.[1][8]

[edit] 1893, Elizabeth Duane Gillespie

In 1893, Elizabeth Duane Gillespie, a descendant of Benjamin Franklin and the president of the Colonial Dames of Pennsylvania, attempted to have a resolution passed requiring the American flag to be displayed on all Philadelphia's public buildings. This is why some credit Philadelphia as Flag Day's original home.[1] In 1937, Pennsylvania became the first state to make Flag Day a legal holiday.[8]

[edit] 1907, BPOE

American fraternal order and social club the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks has celebrated the holiday since the early days of the organization and allegiance to the flag is a requirement of every member.[9] In 1907, the BPOE Grand Lodge designated by resolution June 14 as Flag Day. The Grand Lodge of the Order adopted mandatory observance of the occasion by every Lodge in 1911, and that requirement continues.[9]

The Elks prompted President Woodrow Wilson to recognize the Order's observance of Flag Day for its patriotic expression.[9]

[edit] 1908, Theodore Roosevelt

On June 14, Theodore Roosevelt was dining outside Philadelphia, when he noticed a man wiping his nose with what he thought was the American Flag. In outrage, Roosevelt picked up a small wooden rod and began to whip the man for "defacing the symbol of America." After about five or six strong whacks, he noticed that the man was not wiping his nose with a flag, but with a blue handkerchief with white stars. Upon realization of this, he apologized to the man, but hit him once more for making him "riled up with national pride."[10]

[edit] Observance of Flag Day

The Betsy Ross House

The week of June 14 is designated as "National Flag Week." During National Flag Week, the president will issue a proclamation urging U.S. citizens to fly the American flag for the duration of that week. The flag should also be displayed on all Government buildings. Some organizations hold parades and events in celebration of America's national flag and everything it represents.

The National Flag Day Foundation holds an annual observance for Flag Day on the second Sunday in June. The program includes a ceremonial raising of the flag, recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, singing of the National Anthem (The Star-spangled Banner), a parade and more. [1]

The Betsy Ross House has long been the site of Philadelphia's observance of Flag Day.[1]

20 Things You Should Never Buy Used

Some suggestions I thought you might enjoy!
Thanks for listening, BIG Ed Brady,

We all love scoring great deals on Craigslist and Ebay, but many second-hand purchases are actually terrible deals. Stay clear of these 20 used items that will end up costing you money -- or even endanger your health.

10 Inventive Ways to Save

How to Save on Big-Ticket Items

How to be a Savvy Cheapskate

1. Cribs and children's furniture: If there's any chance that you'll put your children at risk by buying used, just buy new. Used children's furniture, especially cribs, can be a safety hazard because you can't be certain of a potential recall or if the crib was installed correctly. (See also 7 Baby Items You Don't Need to Buy.)

2. Car seats: Even if a used car seat looks OK, damaged car seats aren't uncommon. Considering that safety technology improves every year -- and the fact that car seats can go for as little as $50 -- buying new is usually the better option.

3. Bicycle helmets: Usually, a crash would only crush the foam inside the helmet casing, so the damage to the helmet may not be visible. However, since helmets are meant to protect against one accident only, buying new would be a safer bet.

4. Tires: Sometimes it's hard to tell if used tires were once part of a totaled wreck. If they have been in an accident, they're bound to be unstable and unreliable. Putting your safety at risk for the sake of saving a few bucks just doesn't add up.

5. Laptops: Because of their portability, laptops are prone to all sorts of abuse and problems. When you buy a used laptop, unless it's refurbished, you have no idea what it's been through or when important parts will die on you. You also don't get the warranties and tech support that come with buying new.

6. Software: Most software comes with a serial number that you register with the company when you activate the software on your computer. If the serial number on your use software has already been registered, you can't use it again.

7. Plasma and HDTVs: The cost for fixing or replacing the parts on plasma or HDTVs is high. Sometimes, it costs as much as buying a new TV. Considering the repair costs, you'd want to get an extended warranty, but that isn't an option if you buy your TV used.

8. DVD players: While it's smart to buy used DVDs, this doesn't apply to DVD players. DVD players have lasers that will eventually wear out. The cost to repair or replace may cost more than the player is worth.

9. Digital and video cameras: Like laptops, used digital and video cameras are likely to have been dropped and banged around. It may not be obvious, but once the damage kicks in, it'll be expensive to repair. If you know what to look for in a digital camera, you can get a great new camera without breaking the bank.

10. Speakers and microphones: Speakers and microphones are sensitive audio equipment that don't stand up well to blasting and mishandling. Like laptops and cameras, the damage may not be obvious, but their performance would be severely compromised.

11. Camera lenses: An SLR camera lens is the most expensive part of a camera. It also directly affects the quality of your images. Any damage to the lens, however slight, will show up in your photos.

12. Photo light bulbs: Not the ordinary light bulbs you use at home. We're talking about the light bulbs used with photography equipment. They're relatively expensive, but their life span is short enough that you likely won't get much use out of them if you buy second-hand.

13. Mattresses and bedding: Just think: You may be sleeping with other people's mold, mites, bacteria, and bodily fluids. Besides, even the really good mattresses are only supposed to last eight to 10 years, and it's hard know for sure how old a used mattress may be.

14. Swimsuits and undergarments: This is probably a no-brainer, but it needs to be said: Do not, do not, do not buy used swimsuits or undergarments. They're worn too close to the body -- someone else's body -- to consider buying used.

15. Wet suits: Wet suits lose the ability to keep you warm over time. If you're a scuba diver, or the last owner was one, the constant change in water pressure will eventually wear out the wet suit and make it more likely to tear.

16. Shoes: If you get used footwear, it's likely they're already molded to the last owner's feet. Poor-fitting shoes are not only uncomfortable but can cause all sorts of health problems, as well.

17. Hats: Hats are likely not cleaned before they're resold or donated. If you buy a used hat, you don't know if you're also getting skin infections, old sweat stains, hair products, and other cringe-worthy remnants. Now that's a deal you don't want.

18. Makeup: A good thing to remember about used makeup is that it's a breeding ground for bacteria and a number of contagious diseases. The great deal you found may come with pink eye and cold sores. Instead of buying used, consider making your own beauty products (it's easier than you think) or skip makeup altogether.

19. Pet supplies: Old stains and odors continue to ferment even if used pet supplies are sitting around in storage. If cleanliness is ever an issue, just say no.

20. Vacuum cleaners: Vacuums are among the heavy-duty household appliances that tend to get a lot of use and abuse. They can also cost more to fix than if you bought them new right from the start.

I’m Under Arrest for What? Fifty Bizarre U.S. Laws
Posted 6/10/2010

These are funny laws.  I thought you might enjoy them.  BIG Ed Brady - BOBFM

I’ve never claimed to have extensive knowledge of U.S. legislation throughout history, but it’s safe to say that I and most people I associate with are law-abiding citizens … or not. As it turns out, every state in this country has at least one wacky legal stipulation that could land residents in hot water if they don’t comply. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Alabama
It’s illegal to wear
a fake mustache that causes laughter in church.

Alaska
Whispering in someone’s ear while he’s moose hunting is prohibited.

Arizona
Cutting down a cactus may earn you a twenty-five-year prison term.

Arkansas
It’s illegal to
mispronounce the name of the state of Arkansas.

California
You may not eat an orange in your bathtub.

Colorado
It’s unlawful to lend your vacuum cleaner to your next-door neighbor (Denver).

Connecticut
A pickle cannot actually be a pickle unless it bounces.

Delaware
It’s illegal to get married on a dare.

Washington, D.C.
It’s against the law to post a public notice calling someone a coward for refusing to accept a challenge to duel.

Florida
If you tie an elephant to a parking meter, you must pay the same parking fee as you would for a vehicle.

Georgia
It’s illegal to change the clothes on a storefront mannequin unless you draw the shades first.

Hawaii
All residents may be fined for not owning a boat.

Idaho
A man must not give his sweetheart a box of candy weighing fewer than fifty pounds.

Illinois
It’s illegal to take a French poodle to the opera (Chicago).

Indiana
The value of pi is 4, and not 3.1415.

Iowa
One-armed piano players must perform for free.

Kansas
It’s illegal to throw knives at men wearing striped suits (Natoma).

Kentucky
Every citizen is required to take a shower once a year.

Louisiana
Biting someone with your natural teeth constitutes simple assault, but biting someone with your false teeth classifies as aggravated assault.

Maine
If you keep your Christmas decorations on display after January 14, you’ll be fined.

Maryland
It’s against the law to wash or scrub a sink, no matter how dirty it is (Baltimore).

Massachusetts
No gorilla is allowed in the backseat of any car.

Michigan
A woman may not cut her own hair without her husband’s permission.

Minnesota
It’s illegal to paint a sparrow with the intent of selling it as a parakeet (Harper Woods).

Mississippi
Walking a dog without dressing it in diapers is forbidden (Temperance).

Missouri
Children may buy shotguns in Kansas City, but not toy cap guns.

Montana
It’s a felony for a wife to open her husband’s mail.

Nebraska
Bar owners may not sell beer unless they brew a kettle of soup simultaneously.

Nevada
It’s illegal for men with mustaches to kiss women.

New Hampshire
It’s forbidden to sell the clothes you’re wearing to pay off a gambling debt.

New Jersey
It’s against the law for a man to knit during the fishing season.

New Mexico
Females may not appear unshaven in public.

New York
While riding in an elevator, you must talk to no one, fold your hands, and look toward the door.

North Carolina
It’s against the law to sing off-key.

North Dakota
It’s illegal to lie down and fall asleep with your shoes on.

Ohio
You must honk the horn whenever you pass another car, according to the state’s driver’s education manual.

Oklahoma
It’s forbidden to take a bite out of another person’s hamburger.

Oregon
State law requires dishes to be drip-dried.

Pennsylvania
It’s illegal to sleep on top of a refrigerator outdoors.

Rhode Island
You may not bite off another person’s leg.

South Carolina
If a man promises to marry an unmarried woman, he is required by law to keep his promise.

South Dakota
It is illegal to lie down and fall asleep in a cheese factory.

Tennessee
Selling hollow logs is strictly forbidden.

Texas
You may not shoot a buffalo from the second story of a hotel.

Utah
It is illegal not to drink milk.

Vermont
Women must obtain written permission from their husbands to wear false teeth.

Virginia
Tickling a woman is unlawful.

Washington
It’s illegal to pretend that one’s parents are wealthy.

West Virginia
If you make fun of someone who does not accept a challenge, you risk a six-month prison sentence.

Wisconsin
Unless a customer specifically requests it, margarine may not be substituted for butter in a restaurant.

Wyoming
Unless you have an official permit, you may not take a picture of a rabbit from January to April.

This Court Is Adjourned
Whew! With all this legislation, it’s a wonder we’re not all sharing a prison cell right now. Granted, something tells me the Los Angeles Police Department has bigger fish to fry than popping people who dare to eat oranges while bathing, and that most people who saw me catching some shut-eye on top of a fridge in Pennsylvania wouldn’t call the cops on me, but you never know when you might come across that rare whistle-blower who wants you persecuted to the fullest extent of the law, so it’s probably better to be safe than sorry. The next time I tie up my elephant at a parking meter in Florida, I’ll be sure to bring a pocket full of quarters.

BOB-106-FM has a pretty good "balance" of new & classics

Email Subject: Classic Country

Dear Big Ed,

Iam a devoted BOB-FM listener and a big fan of classic country.  Please play more classic and much less of this new country.  It is a travesty that they call it country in the first place.

Your fan,

Don

=====================

Hi Don,

THANKS for listening to BOB-FM...

...and THANKS for feeling comfortable with me to express to me how you 'really' feel.

In the Radio Business (and it is a "business"), it's really tough to find the perfect balance between the "New" Country and the "Classic" Country.  Yet, believe me, we are trying to play the best 'balance' that we can.

This email that I'm writing, and the one you sent me (below), has a "BCC" to the Managers here at BOB-FM, so they'll read what you think, also.

To remain competitive as an advertising medium, we have to try to attract both the younger listeners and the more mature folks too, so that our advertisers get a lot of customers of all ages.

So, if you can stick with us for about 3 minutes of a "new" Country song you may not like, the "next" one is likely to be an "Oldie" that you'll enjoy.

Does that help?

God bless you,

BIG Ed Brady

Hi there... BIG Ed Brady here...

When I'm "live" on-the-radio, I prefer that you send me an Email (@ ed@dothebob.com) instead of call the studio, please.

I know that some radio announcers can do a 'great' show on the radio, and talk on the phone at the same time... but I can't.

The distraction of the phone, while I'm trying to do my 'best' on the radio isn't easy for me.

So, if you need me while I'm "live" on the air, please use my Email: ed@dothebob.com.

THANKS,

Rue McClanahan,
'Golden Girl' Blanche, dies

By DAVID BAUDER, AP

entertainment-20100603-US.Obit.Rue.McClanahan

NEW YORK — Rue McClanahan, the Emmy-winning actress who brought the sexually liberated Southern belle Blanche Devereaux to life on the hit TV series "The Golden Girls," has died.

She was 76.

Her manager, Barbara Lawrence, said McClanahan died Thursday at 1 a.m. at New York-Presbyterian Hospital of a brain hemorrhage.

She had undergone treatment for breast cancer in 1997 and later lectured to cancer support groups on "aging gracefully." In 2009, she had heart bypass surgery.

McClanahan had an active career in off-Broadway and regional stages in the 1960s before she was tapped for TV in the 1970s for the key best-friend character on the hit series "Maude," starring Beatrice Arthur. After that series ended in 1978, McClanahan landed the role as Aunt Fran on "Mama's Family" in 1983.

But her most loved role came in 1985 when she co-starred with Arthur, Betty White and Estelle Getty in "The Golden Girls," a runaway hit that broke the sitcom mold by focusing on the foibles of four aging — and frequently eccentric — women living together in Miami.

"Golden Girls" aimed to show "that when people mature, they add layers," she told The New York Times in 1985. "They don't turn into other creatures. The truth is we all still have our child, our adolescent, and your young woman living in us."

Blanche, who called her father "Big Daddy," was a frequent target of roommates Dorothy, Rose and the outspoken Sophia (Getty), who would fire off zingers at Blanche such as, "Your life's an open blouse."

Fellow "Golden Girl" Betty White called McClanahan a close and dear friend.

CelebTV: Remembering Rue

"I treasured our relationship," said White, who was working in Los Angeles on the set of her TV Land comedy "Hot in Cleveland" on Thursday. "It hurts more than I even thought it would, if that's even possible."

McClanahan snagged an Emmy for her work on the show in 1987. In an Associated Press interview that year, McClanahan said Blanche was unlike any other role she had ever played.

"Probably the closest I've ever done was Blanche DuBois in 'A Streetcar Named Desire' at the Pasadena Playhouse," she said. "I think, too, that's where the name came from, although my character is not a drinker and not crazy."

Her Blanche Devereaux, she said, "is in love with life and she loves men. I think she has an attitude toward women that's competitive. She is friends with Dorothy and Rose, but if she has enough provocation she becomes competitive with them. I think basically she's insecure. It's the other side of the Don Juan syndrome."

Vicki Lawrence worked with McClanahan on "Mama's Family." Lawrence called her "a consummate professional, an actor's actor."

"It was my good fortune to get to work with her on the first season and a half of 'Mama's Family.' When she got stolen away from 'Mama's Family' to do 'Golden Girls,' I cried," Lawrence said in an e-mail.

After "The Golden Girls" was canceled in 1992, McClanahan, White and Getty reprised their roles in a short-lived spinoff, "Golden Palace."

McClanahan continued working in television, on stage and in film, appearing in the Jack Lemmon-Walter Matthau vehicle "Out to Sea" and as the biology teacher in "Starship Troopers."

She stepped in to portray Madame Morrible, the crafty headmistress, for a time in "Wicked," Broadway's long-running "Wizard of Oz" prequel.

In 2008, McClanahan appeared in the Logo comedy "Sordid Lives: The Series," playing the slightly addled, elderly mother of an institutionalized drag queen.

During production, McClanahan was recovering from 2007 surgery on her knee. It didn't stop her from filming a sex scene in which the bed broke, forcing her to hang on to a windowsill to avoid tumbling off.

McClanahan was born Eddi-Rue McClanahan in Healdton, Okla., to building contractor William McClanahan and his wife, Dreda Rheua-Nell, a beautician. She graduated with honors from the University of Tulsa with a degree in German and theater arts.

McClanahan's acting career began on the stage. According to a 1985 Los Angeles Times profile, she appeared at the Pasadena (Calif.) Playhouse, studied in New York with Uta Hagen and Harold Clurman, and worked in soaps and on the stage.

She won an Obie — the off-Broadway version of the Tony — in 1970 for "Who's Happy Now," playing the "other woman" in a family drama written by Oliver Hailey. She reprised the role in a 1975 television version; in a review, The New York Times described her character as "an irrepressible belle given to frequent bouts of `wooziness' and occasional bursts of shrewdness."

She had appeared only sporadically on television until producer Norman Lear tapped her for a guest role on "All in the Family" in 1971.

She went from there to a regular role in the "All in the Family" spinoff "Maude," playing Vivian, the neighbor and best friend to Arthur in the starring role.

When Arthur died in April 2009, McClanahan recalled that she had felt constrained by "Golden Girls" during the later years of its run. "Bea liked to be the star of the show. She didn't really like to do that ensemble playing," McClanahan said.

McClanahan was married six times: Tom Bish, with whom she had a son, Mark Bish; actor Norman Hartweg; Peter D'Maio; Gus Fisher; and Tom Keel. She married husband Morrow Wilson on Christmas Day in 1997.

She called her 2007 memoir "My First Five Husbands ... And the Ones Who Got Away."

Teach your children the importance of Memorial Day

5/31/2010 5:00:06 AM
Since the Revolutionary War, 657,754 American soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country. More than 2,517, 216 have either died or have been wounded in the wars we Americans have fought.

Wikipedia.com, the on-line encyclopedia, lists 43 wars and conflicts in which we have participated. Yes, the bulk of our casualties came from the Big Five: Civil War, World War II, World War I, Vietnam, and Korea, in that order. But tens of thousands were killed in the other 38 wars from the Revolutionary War to Afghanistan.

When we think of Memorial Days past, starting with the Civil War and the beginning of our national remembrance and formal appreciation, we think not only of those brave men and women who died for the preservation of our Constitution and its noted freedoms, but looking back, we also may remember something else that captured our imagination.

During the Civil War, Union Captain Robert Ellicombe heard the moaning voice of a wounded soldier in the darkness. He couldn't tell whether the soldier was from the North or the South, but decided the only compassionate thing he could do was to go out onto the night-time battlefield and rescue the ailing soldier, regardless of what uniform he wore. It not only turned out to be a Confederate, who died shortly after reaching safety, but was the Captain's own son, who got caught up in the South's efforts while studying music before the beginning of the war.

The grieving Union captain asked that his son receive full military honors, even though he was an enemy soldier. He asked for a full band to play a funeral dirge and was denied every request, with the exception of one bugler. He asked the bugler to play a series of musical notes he had found on a piece of paper in the pocket of the dead youth's uniform.

This wish was granted. That music is played by one lone bugler today at every military funeral and memorial service. It was and is "Taps."

World War I also had a poem that every British, Canadian and American soldier carried in his pocket throughout the war. Written by a Canadian doctor named John McCrae as he witnessed the deaths of hundreds of soldiers killed on the top of a hill where his aid station was at the bottom. We know this poem as "In Flanders Fields."

The author asks his brothers-in-arms to "take up our quarrel with the foe; to you from failing hands we throw… the torch… be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep…." These were clearly the words of our dead to the living. We must never let our fallen comrades down.

Other wars, including those lately surrounded by the Internet, have also given us pause to remember. Perhaps the strongest of these new battle cries comes from the anonymous author of an e-mail making the rounds: "It was the veteran, not the preacher, reporter, poet, lawyer, politician, who gave us respectively the freedoms of religion, the press, speech, right to assemble, the right to a fair trial and all the rest of our Bill of Rights and our Constitution and its many amendments.

Please remember this weekend all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for you. Keep the torch of our freedom burning brightly. Keep faith with those who died yester-year and with those who will die today and tomorrow. Teach your children well the importance of Memorial Day.

Memorial Day's real meaning - Let us Pray and pay our respects.

For contemporary Americans, Memorial Day has two meanings — honoring our war dead and a three-day weekend that kicks off the summer driving season. As the nation observes the holiday for the 143rd time, those meanings are increasingly in conflict.

Memorial Day is generally cited as originating in 1866 in Waterloo, N.Y., to honor the memory of those who died in the Civil War. In fact, other communities, north and south, also had prayers and ceremonies to honor those who gave, in Abraham Lincoln's words, "the last full measure of devotion."

In 1971, Congress switched Memorial Day, which by then had come to honor the dead of all American wars, from its traditional May 30 to the last Monday in May. The change robbed the observance of most of its original meaning. Today, few Americans bother to think about fallen soldiers on the three-day weekend that kicks off the summer, any more than they reflect on the lives of Samuel Gompers and Mother Jones over the Labor Day weekend that ushers in the fall.

Yet 2010 is a very good year to return to the original meaning of Memorial Day — and to not only honor those men and women who have fallen in the service of our country, but to ask how we can reduce the risks of still more Americans dying in future wars.

Viewed from that perspective, gassing up the SUV and heading off for a three-day road trip isn't just an increasingly expensive luxury, it's an act that undercuts the security of this nation for whom our veterans fought and died.

Finally, in returning to the original meaning of Memorial Day, let us also honor and support the men and women in our armed forces who sacrifice for us all. Besides honoring our dead, that means better medical care and decent veterans benefits — including the new and expanded GI bill — for the living.
We can do no less for those to whom we owe so much.

Godly Words for Father's Day - June 20th

Godly Words for Father's Day - June 20th

But even as he spoke, a bright cloud came over them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.”
Matthew 17:5

“I have a hard time even praying the Lord’s Prayer,” she said.

“The first words, ‘Our Father,’ always remind me how disappointed I am with my father.” Others in the circle nodded their heads, some wanting to say even more. What a sad situation, not to be able to call God a heavenly Father.

Part of the problem rises because of definitions. We forget sometimes that God isn’t called heavenly Father because he is like our dads; rather we all have fathers whose responsibility is to remind us by their character and actions of our perfect heavenly Father. Every earthly father disappoints. The tragedy comes when we allow those disappointments to cut us off from our heavenly Father.

In his book Raising a Modern-Day Knight (Tyndale House), author Robert Lewis points out that parents can gain some priceless direction from the way God the Father treated God the Son. These insights are particularly powerful in a father’s relationship with his son. Lewis uses as his starting point the several occasions in which God the Father made public pronouncements about his Son.

Those statements include three ideas children need to hear from their parents:
1) I love you (“my dearly loved Son”);
2) I’m proud of you (“who brings me great joy”); and
3) you have skills (“listen to him”). The third one requires extra thought because it is specific to each child, highlighting his or her skills.

Read through each of these again and ask yourself when was the last time each of your children heard any or all of these from you.

There are many ways to get these points across, but speaking them must be part of the equation. Parents often try to get by, saying, “I show my kids I love them.”

There’s nothing wrong with that as long as it’s not a substitute for speaking the words. Yes, they can be surprisingly hard today (particularly for men). But many children (perhaps even you) would admit that the most manly, godly thing your father ever did (or could have done) was to put those messages into words for you.

Whether or not you heard them, make sure your kids don’t leave home without hearing them from you.

----------
I close with a prayer for fathers who have not had any contact with their children for many years.  "Father, I come before you today admitting my mistakes and sins and those things which I did to harm my relationship with my children. I hold myself accountable, yet because you have forgiven me, I forgive myself and do not carry guilt with me.  You said to "cast all our burdens" on you, and this burden I lay at the foot of your Cross.  In your time and in your way, Father, restore my relationship with my children and reconcile us in a positive way, a way that is meaningful and pleasing to you, Our Heavenly Father. In Jesus' name, AMEN."

Radio Station Manager in Africa Released from Jail

Loburi Alex William. General Manager of Spirit FM in Yei

Security officials in Yei on Monday evening April 26th arrested and detained the General Manager of a private popular local radio station, Spirit FM 99.9, Loburi Alex William. Loburi was arrested at around 8:30pm as he was having supper with his family and members of staff at the Radio premises located at Old Mission Road.

Reports from Yei indicate that Loburi Alex William was picked by two armed public security officials one named, Henry Gaga who said they were acting on instructions of the County Commissioner, David Lokonga Moses. David Lokonga Moses who is the County SPLM Chairman and Head of the Security Committee reportedly insisted on addressing the population yesterday on the radio aabout his party's victory. According to the General Manager, Loburi Alex William, the Commissioner had ordered for his arrest after he could not be connected live on radio.  Loburi said the Commissioner had called him at around 4:00 pm asking to be connected through a telephone link but it was not possible as there were recorded and sponsored programmes running on air that could not be stopped. The General Manager further said the County Commissioner had used intimidating statements on phone such as “Alex, I know you are not with us” before hanging up.  “I tried to explain to His Excellency about the programme lineup and the absence of my technical staff at that time but the Commissioner did not accept what I was telling him” Loburi lamented shortly after his temporary release from the police cells.

After his release last night, Loburi was forced to walk on foot for over 4km on the dangerous streets of Yei in the dead of night to find his way back to the radio station. Loburi observed that although he had not been beaten or tortured, the arrest and detention in the dark unventilated police cell had frightened him and he felt very intimidated. While speaking on a telephone interview with the News Editor of Spirit FM, Akim Olum Mugisa said the armed officers from the public security first came to the station asking to take away one of the presenters who was in the studio at around 7:40 pm. The explanation by Akim Olum Mugisa that it was a recorded programme on air without anybody in the studios fell on deaf ears before one of the security agents decided to physically force his way into the studios and conduct a search himself, but he could not find any human being even after checking behind all the studio curtains. “They immediately left but surfaced later demanding to take my boss whom I accompanied in the company car together with his wife and one of the security officials to the police station where he was detained before we drove back to the station heart broken” Akim said.

Spirit FM is one of the private media houses that had exercised total impartiality during the electoral process especially in the campaign period when it allocated equal airtime to all political parties including independent candidates.
The General Manager was temporarily released from the cells at around 9:30 pm and told by the Police Commissioner Jacob Matoc to report back in the morning of Tuesday April 27.  Spirit FM is one of the private media houses that had exercised total impartiality during the electoral process especially in the campaign period when it allocated equal airtime to all political parties including independent candidates. The programmes Manager said they had observed all the electoral media regulations as set by the National Electoral Commission-NEC through out the entire electoral process including offering free airtime to mobilize the electorate for the just concluded important national exercise.

When the radio General Manager reported back to the police station on Tuesday morning, he was told by the Police Commissioner Jacob Matoc not involve the media house into "siasa" or politics. Jacob Matoc further accused the radio boss of allegedly being against the Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS) and its policies adding that the radio was there to be used by the County Commissioner at any time he felt necessary.  Among the accusations, the General Manager was reminded of how the radio had hosted the Chairman of United Democratic Front(UDF) Peter Abdarahaman Sule after suspected wounded heroes disrupted and dispersed a rally the politician was addressing at Yei Freedom Square on January 30th this year. Peter Abdarahaman Sule was contesting against the incumbent and now Governor-Elect for Central Equatorial State, Clement Wani Konga who stood on SPLM ticket.

No legal charges have been brought against the radio station boss by the time he was declared a free man to leave the police station after being warned that the radio could be closed down if its management does not take "heed".

This is a second incident of security agents attacking media houses in Central Equatoria State after two radio stations, Liberty FM and the catholic founded Radio Bakhita in Juba were temporarily closed last month for airing interviews of a campaign team of an opposition candidate who was vying for governorship of the state. Before the media houses could be allowed to resume operations, their administrations were cautioned to stay out of politics and concentrate on other programmes.

For how long shall the temple of information in South Sudan continue to be defiled and trampled upon like this by the powers that are meant to represent us.  The independent media of Southern Sudan must bind strong together, to counter such political pressures, that all burgeoning states experience.

The 'best' way to reach me while I'm on the air...
Posted 4/6/2010

The 'best' way to reach me while I'm on the air is my Email: ed@dothebob.com.

Some DJs can 'talk on the phone' and do their radio show at the same time, but I prefer not to be on the phone with one person while tens of thousands of people listening to the radio are counting on me to be entertaining.

It's my opinon that the 'ratio' is faulty... putting one person's need (on the phone) over the tons of people listening to my radio show in their cars, at work, and at home.

The truth is shameful.  I can't tell you the number of times, over the years, that something has gone 'wrong' on-the-air, while I was talking to someone on the phone.

So, if you've called the studio during my show and I didn't answer, I'm sorry

However, I'd be happy to get an Email from you anytime, and I can answer your Email when things are less hectic here in the studio.  Hope you understand.

Love ya,
BIG Ed Brady

"EASTER comments from PASTOR ED"

Eggs are fun to find on an Easter Egg hunt, and pretty to look at, but as an Ordained Minister I just "have to" remind you that the real meaning of Easter is the "Resurrection of Jesus" who died on the Cross for our sins on Good Friday, was placed in the tomb for 3 days, and rose again on the first Easter.  Explain that real story from 2,000 years ago to your children and grand-children.  If you don't, who will?  You'll find the story in the Gospels (Matthew's version is my favorite).

Remember to attend the BOB-FM Easter Egg event at Marc Park in Princeton, this Saturday at 9am.  (Be there a half-hour early, because we start at 9am sharp.)  Bring plastic grocery bags for your children to put their eggs in, okay?

"What do eggs have to do with EASTER?"
Posted 3/30/2010

"What do eggs have to do with EASTER?"

At the Jewish Passover Seder, a hard-boiled egg dipped in salt water symbolizes both 'new life' and the Passover sacrifice offered at the Temple in Jerusalem.

In Christian Traditions, the egg was a symbol of new life because a chick (new life) might hatch from the egg, reminding us that Jesus rose from the dead on the first Easter, 2000 years ago.

Eggs were viewed as symbols of 'new life' and fertility through the ages.

Sports History - 50 years ago in Williams Arena
Posted 3/26/2010

One of the most remarkable local sports stories in state history came to a climax 50 years ago today.

On March 26th, 1960, Edgerton beat Austin 72-61 at Williams Arena to become the smallest school to win the single-class boy's basketball state championship.

The Dutchmen led for much of the game, with Dean Veenhof scoring a game-high 27 points. Four of Edgerton's five starters were named to the all-tournament team.

The Dutchmen beat Chisholm and Richfield in the first two rounds of the tournament and finished the season with a 27-and-0 record. Edgerton's enrollment at the time was 94 students.

More than 19-thousand people jammed Williams Arena for the championship game.

A little "Sports" memory from 50 years ago, in 1960, at Williams Arena.

Hi gang,

I found an interesting article about preventing breast cancer.  Hope it helps you.  Here's the article.

Up to a third of breast cancer cases in Western countries could be avoided if women ate less and exercised more, researchers at a conference on breast cancer said Thursday.

While better treatments, early diagnosis and mammogram screenings have dramatically slowed the disease, experts said the focus should now shift to changing behaviors like diet and physical activity.

"What can be achieved with screening has been achieved. We can't do much more," Carlo La Vecchia, head of epidemiology at the University of Milan, told The Associated Press. "It's time to move onto other things."

La Vecchia spoke Thursday on the influence of lifestyle factors at a European breast cancer conference in Barcelona.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. In Europe, there were about 421,000 new cases and nearly 90,000 deaths in 2008, the latest available figures. The United States last year saw more than 190,000 new cases and 40,000 deaths. A woman's lifetime chance of getting breast cancer is about one in eight.

Many breast cancers are fueled by estrogen, a hormone produced in fat tissue. So experts suspect that the fatter a woman is, the more estrogen she's likely to produce, which could in turn spark breast cancer. Even in slim women, exercise can help reduce the cancer risk by converting more of the body's fat into muscle.

La Vecchia cited figures from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which estimated that 25 to 30 percent of breast cancer cases could be avoided if women were thinner and exercised more.

That means staying slim and never becoming overweight in the first place. Robert Baan, an IARC cancer expert, said it wasn't clear if women who lose weight have a lower cancer risk or if the damage was already done from when they were heavy.

Drinking less alcohol could also help. Experts estimate that having more than a couple of drinks a day can boost a woman's risk of getting breast cancer by four to 10 percent.

After studies several years ago linked hormone replacement therapy to cancer, millions of women abandoned the treatment, leading to a sharp drop in breast cancer rates. Experts said a similar reduction might be seen if women ate better — consuming less fat and more vegetables — and exercised more.

Michelle Holmes, a cancer expert at Harvard University, said changing things like diet and nutrition is arguably easier than tackling other breast cancer risk factors.

"Women who have early pregnancies are protected against breast cancer, but teenage pregnancy is a social disaster so it's not something we want to encourage," she said in a phone interview. "But there's no downside to reducing obesity and increasing physical activity."

She also said people may mistakenly think their chances of getting cancer are more dependent on their genes than their lifestyle.

"The genes have been there for thousands of years, but if cancer rates are changing in a lifetime, that doesn't have much to do with genes," she said.

In the 1980s and 1990s, breast cancer rates steadily increased, in parallel with the rise in obesity and the use of hormone replacement therapy, which involves estrogen.

La Vecchia said countries like Italy and France — where obesity rates have been stable for the past two decades — show that weight can be controlled at a population level.

"It's hard to lose weight, but it's not impossible," he said. "The potential benefit of preventing cancer is worth it."

I'll Email a copy of this to Mrs. Brady, and my daughter in law too.

New Sponsor on BOB-106-FM for "Boaters"
Posted 3/24/2010

A new sponsor on BOB-FM will be great for you, if you like to go boating, but don't like the hassle of owning a boat, making payments on a boat, hauling a boat, storing it in the winter, etc.  They own the boats, you rent the fun on the water from them.  Click on the link below...

Our new BOB-FM advertiser is: http://www.yourboatclub.net.

It's a "Membership" club, that allows you to join for a fee, and use their boats (pontoons, fishing boats, ski-boats, etc.) without buying the boat.  It's like "borrowing a boat" for a fee, or like a "time share" for boats, and you can have a different kind of boat everytime you to out to the river or lake.

Check it out, and tell me if you like it.  ed@edbradyradio.com

And, make sure you tell them that you heard their ad on BOB-FM radio, okay?

Glen Campbell - A "BIG" Star willing to help others! Ed
Posted 3/16/2010

One of the "fun" things about being in radio is "hosting" concerts as the Emcee... and going backstage to meet the stars before and after the shows.

Here's a quick story about Glen Campbell and how this "BIG" Star was willing to help others.

Before the concert, Glen asked me if I had an extra T-shirt from our radio station.  (The station that I was with then was KBRQ-AM/FM in Denver, Colorado).  I did have an extra KBRQ T-shirt and Glen said, "Give it to me and let me wear it on stage... and when people take pictures of me, they'll get your radio station's call letters in every photo!"

What a cool guy!  Thanks, Glen.  I'll always remember your concert and your willingness to help our radio station.  Because of his kindness, I've played his songs on the radio a few extra times.  Sometimes, on the radio, we have a choice of which songs to add and which songs to drop.  Glen, because of his kindness, is always an "add" in my radio career.

Glen will be at the Grand Casino Hinkley on April 16-17, 2010.

God bless you,
BIG Ed Brady, BOB-FM

Here's a recent photo of Glen Campbell for you.

Their debut album, Brand New Man, was released on August 13, 1991.

Its first four singles, "Brand New Man", "My Next Broken Heart", "Neon Moon", and "Boot Scootin' Boogie" reached number one, they all had Ronnie Dunn on lead vocals.

The album's last single, "Lost and Found", however, reached #6, their first single to miss the top spot, and the first to feature Kix Brooks on lead vocals.

The album was certified 6x Multi-Platinum (6 Million copies sold) by the RIAA, and peaked at #3.

Win tix to Brooks & Dunn all week 3-7pm on BOB-FM

Leon Eric "Kix" Brooks III was born May 12, 1955, in Shreveport, La., and before moving to Nashville in 1979, he worked the club circuit in Alaska and Maine.

Ronnie Gene Dunn was born June 1, 1953, in Coleman, Texas, and before moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma, he briefly studied theology in a seminary at Abilene Christian University, preparing for a life in ministry.

There, Ronnie fronted the house band at a popular nightspot called Duke's Country. He later broke into the national spotlight by winning a talent contest that was sponsored by Marlboro.  They were both "solo" artists back then.

BOB-106-FM   - Tune in to win every day this week, okay?

And I thought that a "Salad" was always healthy...
Posted 3/5/2010

Hi friends,

BIG Ed Brady here...  Before I blog... When you go to the Twin Cities Auto Show (Mar. 6-14) downtown, make sure you look for a booth called "Car Deals For Radio dot Com" - we advertise them on BOB-FM.

Being a person who is over-weight, I always thought that a "Salad" was healthy for me!  But, I found this article saying that some of the most popular salads out there are "not" the best for you.  The list is below, if you'd like to check it out.

One thing that I have learned from Mrs. Brady: Eat Spinach, not iceberg lettuce for food value.  Everytime we get a Subway sandwich, for example, we tell them to "skip" the shredded lettuce, because it has almost no food value.  Instead, we get "spinach" and tomatoes, etc.  Mrs. Brady says that the 'darker' the green, the better the nutrition.

Now the article about salads that I borrowed from the Internet, from Eat This, Not That.  Oh, remember to pray before your meal.

If you’re looking to eat healthfully at your favorite restaurant, don’t automatically turn to the salad menu. Turns out, restaurant salads can often be as bad as—or worse than—any burger or steak on the menu. Sure, salads may contain a fresh produce base, but those leafy greens are too often weighed down with cheese, deep fried croutons, and high-calorie dressings. In fact, one salad from a popular chain restaurant contains over 1,500 calories! Surprised? Then check out this list of the Worst Salads in America, culled from the new book Eat This, Not That! 2010.

#6. Quizno’s Honey Mustard Chicken Regular Chopped Salad
920 calories
65 g fat (20 g saturated, 0.5 g trans)
1,685 mg sodium

The secret to this salad’s salacious calorie count is in the sauce. A general rule of thumb when you eat at Quizno’s: Serving sizes are often not what they seem. This “Regular Chopped Salad” accounts for nearly half your day’s caloric allotment. Even most of the small chopped salads pack over 500 calories. Unless you order the Pan Asian small, consider a salad at Quizno’s a meal unto itself, not a side dish.

Bonus tip: Want to make sure your lunch doesn't destroy your diet? Familiarize yourself with this indispensable list of the 30 Unhealthiest Sandwiches in America. It'll help you keep your waistline from ballooning.

Pan Asian Small Chopped Salad

#5. Romano’s Macaroni Grill Parmesan-Crusted Chicken Salad
960 calories
16 g saturated fat
1,990 mg sodium
49 g carbohydrates

Here’s a little menu magic for you: Anytime you see the words “parmesan-crusted,” assume the dish has been slathered in cheese and given the frying treatment. Which is probably why this Parmesan-Crusted Chicken Salad has nearly a full day’s worth of sodium and half a day’s worth of calories. One of the biggest problems with Mac Grill’s menu items—though we love it in general—is the sodium content. We’d say order the Warm Spinach Salad, but it’s packed with as much salt as you’ll find in five large orders of McDonald’s french fries. Your only smart salad side dish selection at this chain is the Fresh Greens or Caesar.

Bonus tip: Order anything from the 20 Best Restaurant Foods in America and leave the restaurant feeling satisfied with your healthy and delicious dish. Or lose your belly fat fast by making all your favorites yourself with the new book Cook This, Not That! Kitchen Survival Guide.

Eat This Instead!
Fresh Greens
320 calories

300 mg sodium
20 g carbohydrates

#4. Chili’s Quesadilla Explosion Salad
1,400 calories
88 g fat (26 g saturated)
2,370 mg sodium

This salad is explosive all right. Here’s a tip: At most Mexican restaurants, the salads are actually the absolute worst items on the menu. For example, with burritos and tacos, the amount of high-fat, high-calorie fillers is limited to what will fit in the shells. But there’s no built-in portion control with salads. So it’s no surprise that this Quesadilla Explosion Salad contains a full day’s worth of salt and nearly three-quarters of your day’s calories (it’s the caloric equivalent of 172 Cheetos, in fact). Unfortunately, Chili’s offers only three salads with less than 500 calories. Stick with the Guiltless Grill options, or the salad mentioned below.

Bonus tip: Corona may taste great with Mexican food, but is it the smartest beverage option? Read The 40 Best and Worst Beers to find out. (Otherwise it's nearly impossible to tell the difference between a bottle of beer with more than 300 calories versus one with just 100—knowing the difference and choosing the smarter swap can save you 20 lbs of fat a year!)

Eat This Instead!
Small Caribbean Salad with Grilled Chicken
490 calories
24 g fat (4 g saturated)
420 mg sodium

#3. Applebee’s Oriental Chicken Salad with Oriental Vinaigrette

1,430 calories

This salad starts out with a bed of “Fresh Asian greens,” according to the menu. Unfortunately, these greens serve as a bed for deep-fried chicken tenders and carbohydrate-heavy crispy noodles. Without dressing, this dish rings in at 840 calories—already more than in an Applebee’s hamburger. But factor in the super-heavy dressing and you’re adding another 590 calories to the mix. To put that in perspective, a lunch sandwich shouldn’t pack more than 500 calories, tops. At Applebee’s, the only salad that won’t sink your entire meal is the Paradise Chicken Salad, which cuts back on calories by using grilled chicken instead of fried and actual produce instead of noodles. (Note: Applebee's refuses to disclose their nutrition information, so you just might be consuming days' worth of sodium as well!)

Bonus tip: For full nutrition information for all of your favorite chain restaurants and thousands of foods, download the bestselling Eat This, Not That! to your iPhone. It’s like having your own personal nutritionist in your pocket at all times, and will help you avoid the caloric calamities and guide you to the best ways to lose your belly fast.

Eat This Instead!
Paradise Chicken Salad

#2. Cheesecake Factory Caesar Salad with Chicken
1,513 calories
16 g saturated fat
1,481 mg sodium
23 g carbohydrates

The top three words you never want to see sharing a space with “salad” on a menu: tuna, taco, and yes, the mighty Caesar. Consider that tangle of romaine a hapless vehicle for the troubling trinity of croutons, Parmesan cheese, and viscous Caesar dressing. This Cheesecake Factory version is the worst; the elephantine portion yields a salad with more calories than 10 Twinkies! If you’re looking for a salad meal at Cheesecake Factory, choose from the Weight Management varieties—every other salad tops 500 calories.

#1. California Pizza Kitchen Waldorf Chicken Salad with Blue Cheese Dressing (full)
1,570 calories
30 g saturated fat
2,082 mg sodium

CPK is no stranger to the title of “Worst Salad in America”—in fact, last year’s Thai Crunch Salad from California Pizza Kitchen won this dubious distinction for having over 2,000 calories. CPK has since downgraded the Asian-inspired leafy disaster (to a more modest 1,399 calories). Unfortunately, the rest of their salad lineup is still sorely lacking in smart options. This Waldorf Chicken Salad takes the title this year—the blue cheese dressing certainly doesn’t help, and neither does the oversized plate this salad is served on. Believe it or not, your best bet at CPK is to order two slices of thin-crust pizza with any toppings you want. But if you’re set on a salad, choose a half-size of the Moroccan Chicken, below.

Moroccan Chicken Salad (half)

Bomshel, Joey + Rory and Steel Magnolia are up for Vocal Duo, and Gloriana, the Eli Young Band, and The Lost Trailers are in the running for Vocal Group.

Online ballots can be placed at
www.VoteACM.com. Voting will be open through March 12th.

The winners in the three "Top New" categories will be announced later in March. They will become the nominees for Top New Artist, and a new round of voting for this category will begin April 1st. The Top New Artist winner will be revealed during the 45th annual ACM Awards ceremony, which will take place in Las Vegas and air on CBS on April 18th.

Nominees for the ACM's "Top New" categories:

TOP NEW SOLO VOCALIST

Luke Bryan

Jamey Johnson

Chris Young

TOP NEW VOCAL DUO

Bomshel

Joey + Rory

Steel Magnolia

TOP NEW VOCAL GROUP

Eli Young Band

Gloriana

The Lost Trailers

>>Chris Young Likes Fan-Voted Awards

Chris Young is among the nominees for the Academy of Country Music's Top New Solo Vocalist. It's a fan-voted award, which is just fine with the season four "Nashville Star" winner.

Young says he thinks it's a good idea to get the fans involved with the awards process, explaining that it generates interest and gets the public invested in the artists and their careers.

Young is facing Luke Bryan and Jamey Johnson for Top New Solo Artist. The other categories up for an online vote are Top New Vocal Duo, with nominees Bomshel, Joey + Rory, and Steel Magnolia; and Top New Vocal Group, which includes the Eli Young Band, Gloriana, and The Lost Trailers.

Thanks for listening to BOB-106-FM and for joining me weekday afternoons 3-7pm.... This Saturday night I'll be filling in for Wayne Dalida from 6pm-Midnight... Then, I'll see you on "Country Gospel" every Sunday 8am-10am on BOB-FM (and on "Sonrise" 6am-8am Sundays on Spirit-95.9-FM).  BIG Ed Brady

In spite of the name, French fries are practically an American birthright. They’re offered as the first choice side dish with nearly every fast-food and sit-down chain meal available. But here’s the catch: In a recent study of 7,318 New York City patrons leaving fast food chains during the lunch hour, researchers learned that combo meals—meaning meals with sides—averaged 1,100 calories each, which is over half a day’s allotment. It goes to show: When your regular meals at these restaurants are already pushing the nutritional envelope, adding an extra 300 (or more!) empty calories can make for a dietary disaster.

The authors of the best-selling weight-loss series Eat This, Not That! and Cook This, Not That! have rounded up three of the worst orders of fries available at chain restaurants across the country. We’ve also offered up the surprising winner of the fast food French fry cook-off—you’ll never believe which restaurant chain produces the healthiest fried spuds!

Worst Curly Fries
Arby’s Curly Fries (Large)
640 calories
34 g fat (5 g saturated, 0 g trans)
1,460 mg sodium

Arby’s is famous for its curly fries—too bad they’re overloaded with fat, calories and sodium. When one side dish accounts for nearly three-quarters of your daily allotment of salt, you know there’s a problem. As fun as these curli-Qs are, stick to the Homefry variety at Arby’s—downsizing to a small Curly Fries will still leave you with a 410-calorie side, which is more than many of Arby’s sandwiches!

Bonus tip: For full nutrition information for all of your favorite chain restaurants and thousands of foods, download the bestselling Eat This, Not That! iPhone app. It’s like having your own personal nutritionist in your pocket at all times, and will help you avoid the caloric calamities and guide you to the best ways to lose your belly fast.

Eat This Instead!
Homestyle Fries (Small)
350 calories
15 g fat (2 g saturated)
720 mg sodium

Worst Wedge Fries

Jack in the Box Bacon Cheddar Wedges
715 calories
45 g fat (13 g saturated, 1 g trans)
905 mg sodium

It doesn’t take a nutritionist to identify the hazards of a grease-soaked, cheese-slathered sack of deep-fried potatoes, but by appearance alone, nobody could guess what’s really at stake when you order this side from Jack’s. The American Heart Association recommends that people cap their trans fat intake at 1 percent of total calories. For people on a 2,000-calorie diet, that’s about 2 grams per day. See the problem? Another issue, of course, is the overload in calories—about one-third your daily allotment!

Bonus tip: Cheese fries are clearly an unhealthy choice. But sometimes healthy-seeming options are just as dangerous as the obvious diet-sinkers. For 30 jaw-dropping examples, check out The 30 Worst Sandwiches in America

Eat This Instead!
Grilled Chicken Strips (4) with Fire Roasted Salsa
185 calories
2 g fat (0.5 g saturated)
805 mg sodium

Worst Fries for Your Blood Pressure
Dairy Queen Chili Cheese Fries
1,240 calories
71 g fat (28 g saturated, 0.5 g trans)
2,550 milligrams sodium

This one’s a no-brainer: Chili, cheese, fried potatoes. But even a savvy eater couldn’t possibly anticipate how bad these 3 ingredients could be when combined by one heavy-handed fast-food company. There’s as much sodium in this side dish as you’ll find in 15 strips of bacon. Stick with classic ketchup and recapture nearly a day’s worth of sodium and 930 calories.

Bonus tip: Save calories, time, and money with our free Eat This, Not That! newsletter. Sign up today and you’ll get the Eat This, Not That! guide to shopping once and eating for a week for free!

Eat This Instead!
French Fries (regular)
310 calories
13 g fat (2 g saturated)
640 mg sodium

Worst Regular Order of Fries

Five Guys Fries (large)
1,464 calories
71 g fat (14 g saturated)
213 mg sodium

Unfortunately, Five Guys doesn’t offer anything but fries in the side department. Your safest bet, of course, is to skip the fries altogether (you’d be better off adding a second patty to your burger), but if you can’t bring yourself to eat a burger sans fries, then split a regular order. That will still add 310 calories to your meal, but it beats surrendering more than 75% of your day’s calories to a greasy paper bag.

Bonus tip: Sides account for a third of our combo-meal calories—but drinks account for a quarter of the total calories we consume each day! Battle the liquid bulge: Avoid all drinks on this shocking list of The Worst Drinks in the Supermarket.

Eat This Instead!
Regular Fries (1/2 serving)
310 calories
15 g fat (3 g saturated)
45 mg sodium

Worst Fries in America
Chili’s Texas Cheese Fries w/Jalapeno Ranch
1,920 calories
147 g fat (63 g saturated)
3,580 mg sodium

The only thing that comes close to redeeming this cheesy mound of lard and grease is the fact that it’s ostensibly meant to be shared with a few friends. Even so, you’ll collectively be taking in an entire day’s worth of calories, three days’ allotment of saturated fat, and a day and a half’s allotment of sodium. What’s even scarier, if you can imagine, is that even if you try to order more sensibly and ask for the “half” order of Texas Cheese Fries, you’ll still receive a disastrous dish that packs in 1,400 calories. There’s one French fries side dish at Chili’s that’s acceptable, although even in its much-reduced form, you’d be better off splitting it.

Bonus Tip: See what other Chili’s items made our list of The 20 Worst Restaurant Foods in America.

Eat This Instead!
Homestyle Fries
380 calories
23 g fat (4 g saturated)
230 mg sodium

Best Fast Food Fries in America
McDonald’s Small French Fries
230 calories
11 g fat (1.5 g saturated)
160 mg sodium

Out of the big three fast food joints (Mickey D’s, Wendy’s, and BK), you’ll find the least caloric, least salty fries underneath the golden arches. The key to ordering a smart side dish is portion sizing—and McDonald’s has that under control.

Let's learn from Tiger Woods, okay?
Posted 2/19/2010

Let's all learn from Tiger Woods, okay?

What can we learn?  This is something that I try to share with every young man or young woman I encounter:

"SHORT-TERM CHOICES can have LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES."

I'm not picking on Tiger Woods here.  He is just an easy-to-understand example who is currently in the News.  His short-term choices probably seemed like a good idea at the time, right?  I'm sure he even enjoyed the short-term benefits and pleasure in various situations.

However, what did it cost him?  Probably it will cost him everything. Things will never be the same for Tiger, no matter how many times he apologizes.

I'm not afraid to be transparent and share choices that I made early in my life and what it cost me personally.

Jesus teaches us, "You reap what you sow."  A great pastor, Charles Stanley, has added to that and said, "You always reap what you sow, more than you sow, and later than you sow."  Another pastor, I'm not sure who, has said that "Sin always takes you further than you want to go, lasts longer than you want it to last, and costs you more than you were willing to pay."

Now, a brief version of my story because I don't want to hammer Tiger in this BLOG.  When I was in college (at Kent State University), I used to go drinking beer with my buddies on a regular basis.  Some nights, we'd even go out with the goal of getting drunk, so we used to "chug" pitchers of beer.  Fun, right?  It seemed so at the time.

However, 20 years later I had developed a regular habit of drinking every day, became an alcoholic, and my wife divorced me.  I lost my wife, my 3 children, my home, my car...everything.  Pretty expensive beer, right?  My short-term choices of getting drunk with my buddies had life-long consequences, and just like Tiger Woods, I cannot turn back the clock and do it over. Jesus delivered me from alcohol, and I haven't had a drink since 1993, but, I haven't seen my 3 children for about 18 years now (my 2 daughters live in Los Angeles and my son lives in Denver), but I have had to just "turn them over to the Lord" and wait until Jesus restores our relationship.  If I never see them again on earth, I pray that someone lead them to Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, so that I'll see them "forever & ever" in heaven.

So learn from Tiger... Learn from Big Ed... STOP, THINK, & MAKE GOOD CHOICES on a daily basis, because short-term choices (especially bad ones) can have life-long consequences of pain and problems.  However, "Good Choices" (You reap what you sow) can have positive life-long consequences!  Pray to your Father in heaven, and ask for Wisdom.  Thank Jesus for dying for you and by his death and resurrection we get to go to heaven.  Praise the Holy Spirit for leading and guiding you to make good choices daily.

In His Love,
Pastor Ed or Big Ed... I'll answer to either one.  See you on the radio daily, M-F 3-7pm and Sun 8-10am.
Support Jimmy Wayne's walk - "Meet Me Halfway"
Posted 2/18/2010

The Story

On January 1, 2010, Jimmy Wayne launched his “Meet Me Halfway” campaign when he begins his solo walk halfway across America in Nashville, TN.  Wayne’s intention is not only to raise awareness of the plight of the homeless, especially at risk children, teens and young adults, but also raise funds for organizations that benefit homeless youth, including HomeBase Youth Services, a Phoenix, AZ based organization that provides essentials for homeless young adults. Wayne will begin the walk at 10:00 a.m. CT on January 1st at Monroe Harding in Nashville, another organization that services at risk children and young adults. He plans to walk to Phoenix, AZ.

Jimmy encourages you to get involved -- in whatever way you can. Maybe you'd make a great foster parent. Perhaps you could volunteer to help kids in your community. And if making a donation is more your style, anything you can contribute to the cause will be helpful. Find an organization in your own community that helps kids at risk. Or feel free to make a donation to one of the organizations below.

As of the date of this BOB-BLOG, Feb 18, 2010, Jimmy Wayne is nearly a third of the way through his "Meet Me Halfway" walk from Nashville to Phoenix.

He crossed the border into Oklahoma Tuesday evening, completing 530 miles of the roughly 17-hundred-mile trip. He says his trek is going well, noting, quote, "Walking through the small towns and farmlands in Tennessee and Arkansas has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. I have met some incredible and generous people who have offered me meals, a warm and dry place to sleep and companionship." He admits that when he began the journey back on New Year's Day, he didn't have any expectations but had made a few assumptions -- which have been wrong. Wayne explains, quote, "I thought I would be alone, sleeping in a tent at night. But as the saying goes, man makes plans and God laughs. There have been many times I've slept outside, but even more times that because of a kind and generous soul, I have had a roof over my head."

While Jimmy Wayne set out on his own, one supporter quickly donated an RV to provide assistance and security for the singer.

His goal is to raise awareness of the homeless and money for the organizations that help them. JIMMY WAYNE, who spent time as a teenager living on the streets, is particularly interested in drawing attention to the needs of homeless youth and young adults. He explains that many of these people -- like him -- grew up in foster care, and after turning 18 found themselves struggling to make it on their own with no family or other system of support.

If you want to offer your financial support, or want more info, go to his website: http://www.jimmywayne.com.

Thanks, BIG Ed Brady, BOB-FM
PS: Remember to support HAITI too, if possible.  Text HAITI to 52000 and $10 will be added to your phone bill, which will be donated to the Salvation Army's efforts helping Haitians.  God bless you. EB

Weatherman says "No More Snow" for February
Posted 2/16/2010

A climatologist says "persistent" is a good way to characterize Minnesota's winter so far. The U-of-M's Mark Seeley says that applies to snow and cold.  We'll see continued cold temperatures but we should escape any more heavy snowfalls this month. If you've "had it" with all the snow this month, U-of-M climatologist Mark Seeley has encouraging news about the rest of February.

Careful... Pollution Alert now thru Saturday
Posted 2/11/2010

(St. Paul, MN) --

Love ya, BIG Ed Brady

The Twin Cities and Rochester are under an air pollution health alert through Saturday. Pollution control officials say fine particles are nearing levels considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. Those groups include people with respiratory and cardiovascular concerns, young children, the elderly and those doing heavy work or exercise out of doors.
Harmon Killebrew and Simone Augustus
Posted 2/9/2010

Here are a couple of MN Sports stories I thought you might enjoy today.  THANKS for listening!  BIG Ed Brady

>>Classic

(Undated) -- Twins all-time great Harmon Killebrew is donning the old uniform again, this time at the so-called birthplace of baseball. Killebrew and other old-timers are scheduled to play in the Hall of Fame Classic on June 20th at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, New York. Others scheduled to play in the game include fellow Hall-of-Famers Bob Feller, Gary Carter and Mike Schmidt. Killebrew last month had gall bladder surgery in Idaho, and the operation went very well. The procedure forced Killebrew to miss TwinsFest at the Metrodome.

>>Signed Up

(Minneapolis, MN) --

Augustus agreed to a contract extension instead of opting for free agency. In 2006, the Lynx made Augustus the number one overall pick in the WNBA draft after she completed an all-American career at Louisiana State. Augustus was the 2006 WNBA rookie of the year and has made the league's All-Star team twice.

Perennial WNBA All-Star Seimone Augustus is staying with the Lynx. You can hear the MN Lynx games right here on BOB-FM.

Follow the MN Lynx on BOB-FM radio!

She also played for team USA in the 2008 Olympics, helping the team bring home the gold medal from Beijing. Augustus is coming off a knee injury that limited her to just six games last season. Last weekend, she became the first women's basketball player at LSU to have her number retired.

It's so good to be back "home" on BOB-106-FM again
Posted 2/8/2010

I'll keep this short, because you don't want to read about me going "on and on and on" about how much I really "love" working here with you each day on BOB-106-FM.

Last week, as you may know, I was in the hospital.  THANKS for your "Get Well Cards" and Emails... and most of all "THANK YOU" for your prayers!

I'm back, feelin' better...and I missed you. I never work a day in  my life, because I have so much 'fun' working in radio, it's not work to me.

If you ever go to the hospital, let me know and I'll say prayers for you.

God bless you,
Ed Brady
Surgery for both Mrs. Brady and me... Asking 4 prayers
Posted 1/26/2010

Would you put Mrs. Brady and me on your "Prayer" list, please?

My wife just came through surgery and although the surgery went well, there has been some small "infection" problems, so pray for her 100% recovery, please.

I go in for surgery this Friday morning at 7am, and I ask for you to pray for the Doctor, Nurse, and staff, so they do everything right during my procedure and during my recovery too.  Jesus will be there with me for He said, "I'll never leave you."

I'll be off the air this Friday...and next week too (so I can rest and recover from surgery), but I'll be back on-air  on BOB-FM the following Monday, Feb. 8th, 3-7pm

For "Country Gospel" on Sunday mornings, I'll possibly pre-record those shows this coming weekend since I'll be home in bed...getting well, by the grace of God. Pray for Mrs. Brady and me, please.
Love ya, Ed Brady
Write to Brett Favre... Write to Brad Childress too...
Posted 1/25/2010

If you'd like to see Brett Favre return next year... Or, you'd like to see Brett retire, write to Brett and Brad and Ziggy.

Don't Email because most people delete those, so a hand written or typed letter might get read and influence the future of the Minnesota Vikings.

My opinion is: Because Brett is so "in love" with football, I believe that he will 'want' to return.  But, based on the pain I saw in his wife's face on TV Sunday, I don't think that she will let him return.  Since he has such a passion for NFL Football, maybe The Vikings should make him a Coach?  Not a head coach, but just because Brett has a 'passion' for the game, we ought to make a place for him on the coaching staff, if he wants it.

Below, some info from the News.
God bless you,
Ed Brady BOB-FM

>>Poll: Fans Want Favre Back

(Undated) -- Minnesotans are eagerly chiming-in on what could take days, weeks or months to work out -- namely, will Brett Favre come back for next season?

A poll by the "Star Tribune" found more than two-thirds of Vikings fans want Favre back. Vikings rookie receiver Percy Harvin says he'd vote "yes"--but adds Favre has put in numerous years in the league and "I don't how much beating a man can take." After losing a shot at the Super Bowl last night, the 40-year-old Favre said he and his family would take a couple days to decide whether he'll return for the final season of his two-year, 25-million-dollar contract.

Weekdays 3-7pm...and Sundays 8-10am on BOB-106-FM
Posted 1/22/2010

My favorite times of the week are Weekdays 3-7pm, when I get to host "Drive Time" on BOB-FM... and every Sunday morning when I'm honored to host "Country Gospel" on BOB-106-FM.  Hope you can tune in for both each week.

Very, very early on Sunday mornings, I also have another radio music ministry that God has lovingly given to me.  It's called "Sonrise with Pastor Ed" and it airs on WLKX "Spirit-95.9-FM" every Sunday morning 6-8am.  This station is just across the hall from BOB-FM, so it's easy to go from one station 6-8am to the next at 8-10am.

God bless you,
Ed Brady
PS: I'm praying that the Vikings "beat" the Saints... and then "WIN" the Super Bowl.  That would be great!

Country Legend Carl Smith -- Carlene Carter's Dad -- Passes Away
Posted 1/18/2010

Carl Smith (March 15, 1927 – January 16, 2010) recently died.  He was an American country music singer. Known as "Mister Country," Smith was the former husband of June Carter Cash and Goldie Hill and the drinking companion of Johnny Cash. He was one of country's most successful male artists during the 1950s, with 30 Top 10 hits. His success continued well into the 1970s, when he had a charting single every year except one. He is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Country Music Hall of Famer -- who was also Carlene Carter's dad and the late June Carter Cash's ex-husband -- passed away at his Franklin, Tennessee home on Saturday at the age of 82. Smith was a prominent member of the country music scene in the 1950s. He arrived in Nashville in 1950, and eventually became a regular on the Grand Ole Opry.

In 1952 Smith married June Carter, with whom he had a daughter, Carlene Carter, in 1955. Smith and Carter divorced two years later. In September 1957 Smith married singer Goldie Hill. They remained together until she died in 2005.

Carl Smith celebrated his first chart-topping hit with 1951's "Let Old Mother Nature Have Her Way." Subsequent hits included "(When You Feel Like You're in Love) Don't Just Stand There," "Just Wait Till I Get You Alone," and "Hey Joe." Throughout the '50s he expanded his media profile to television, and joined Marty Robbins and Webb Pierce in starring in the 1956 film "Buffalo Guns."

He continued recording, touring, and working on television throughout the '60s, although his chart success began to wane. Smith retired from the music business in 1977, turning his attention instead to breeding quarter horses. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2003.

Carl Smith is just one of the "Country Classic" artists that you'll hear on "Total Country" BOB-106-FM radio.

Pray for Carlene Carter (his daughter) and her family during their time of grief.
God bless you, Ed Brady

An Email from a listener - A question for Pastor Ed
Posted 1/15/2010

Thank you for listening to our radio program every day on the way home from work.  God has blessed me with the opportunity to serve Him by serving you.  Weekdays 3-7pm (Drive Time) and Sundays 8-10am (Country Gospel) are my favorite times of the day.  I'm glad that God uses that time that we have together to show His love to you.

Regarding your questions:
  • "I was just wondering if  here is a dog heaven?"
  • "Is there any particular verse in the Bible stating it?"

There is no BIble verse saying that dogs will be in heaven, but there is no Bible verse saying that there will be no dobs in heaven.  For example, there is a verse in the Bible stating that "there is no marriage" in heaven.  We'll know our spouses, but no marriage there.

Regarding your pet that just died, I believe that God loves all of His creation, and that includes dogs, cats, birds, flowers, fish, lions and lambs, etc. and there is nothing in The Bible that says that these animals have an "eternal soul" like men and women do.  However, there is a Scripture in Isaiah that teaches us that in the "New Jerusalem" - when the heaven and earth that we live in now is gone, Jesus comes back, and with Him comes a "New" heaven and earth, there will be animals enjoying this new heaven.  Read Isaiah here:

"The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the goat; and the calf and the young lion and the calf together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea." Isaiah 11:6-9

If all those animals will be there, I believe yours will be too.  God's plan of salvation was for men and women, who are created in the image of God.  However, God clearly loves dogs, cats, birds, etc., right?  God uses animals to teach us unconditional love.  No matter what we do to our dogs, they always come to us with their tail wagging happily, right?

Don't be mad that you didn't go back to see your dog at the time of death.  Many humans 'wait' until they are alone and 'wait' until their loved ones leave the room before they "give up their spirit" and die.  Many people prefer not to die in front of their families.  Your dog was in the loving hands of the Veteranarian, a person whom God has called to care for and comfort pets.

After the thousand year Millennial Reign of Christ, God says, "Behold, I create new heavens and a new earth..." (Isaiah 65:17),  and then mankind and animals will enjoy a redeemed Earth where they will never have to face death or suffering throughout a never ending Eternity.

"And He that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And He said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful." Revelation 21:5

Did Christ die for animals?  No, Christ's death was to forgive the sins of men and women.  All who believe in Jesus will be in heaven.  For those who reject Him, God has created a place for people to go who don't want to be with Him and don't want to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

Can animals sin? No, only people have that free will choice.  Can animals accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior?  No, that choice is reserved for people becuase we were created in God's image.  Does that mean that God doesn't love His creatures, like dogs? No.  Your "forever" in heaven would be better if your dog were there, right?  Since Jesus has gone ahead of us to prepare a place for us (read John 14:1 and following), I believe that your mansion in heaven will have your dog with you because that would increse your heavenly reward... and even dogs (cats, lions, lambs, bears, etc.) will always act correctly and perfectly.  The Bible says that is true, and I offered the "Lion/Lamb" Scripture above to prove that from the Word of God.

And remember Noah...and his many animals!
Consider the very first covenant established between God and his people, made with Noah right after the flood. The clouds part and the world’s first Rainbow appears. God tells Noah..... "Behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; and with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth."  Genesis 9:9-10

God uses pets to help humans learn about love.  From pets, we learn mercy, compassion, patience, and understanding, and we also learn what it means to receive unconditional love.  Our pets offer us companionship, devotion, amusement, and joyful delight. God meant for them to add pleasure and fulfillment to our lives. Animals are one of the "good gifts" God has given to us!

Need more? Or, does that comfort you during your time of grief?  It's "normal" to feel sad and sorrow and grieve the loss of your pet.  Go ahead and cry.  It's a gift from God to let the pain "out" of you.

When I see you in heaven, make sure you bring your pet over and introduce him/her to me, okay?

Feel free to share my answer with others whom would be comforted. God loves you with unconditional love.

    In His Love,

Let's learn from Tiger Woods, okay?
Posted 1/14/2010

Let's all learn from Tiger Woods, okay?

What can we learn?  This is something that I try to share with every young man or young woman I encounter:

"SHORT-TERM CHOICES can have LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES."

I'm not picking on Tiger Woods here.  He is just an easy-to-understand example who is currently in the News.  His short-term choices probably seemed like a good idea at the time, right?  I'm sure he even enjoyed the short-term benefits and pleasure in various situations.

However, what did it cost him?  Probably it will cost him everything.

When Tragedy Hits Haiti: "How Can We Help?"
Posted 1/13/2010

When a horrible tragedy hits Haiti, or some other place in the world, how can we help?

My friends will not be surprised when my first suggestion is "prayer" - simply because it works to ask God to help these folks.  He can actually send angels to comfort them and help them.

Next, we can use our financial resources to donate to folks who are prepared to help, like The Red Cross and The Salvation Army.

The American Red Cross is already there and helping folks in Haiti and has pledged hundreds of thousands of dollars . The Minnesota chapter suggests that local residents help by sending supplies, clothing and most importantly, by donating money.

When international disasters occur, people might want to go to the disaster area to volunteer. While some non-profit organizations exist to facilitate those efforts, the Minnesota chapter of the American Red Cross said right now, the Haitian Red Cross is taking the lead in responding and they'll let us know if they need more volunteers to physically go to Haiti at this time

They have trained volunteers ready to assist and they're already helping with searching for people and as that transitions they will do more with food and shelter and helping people through this relief effort, and un-trained volunteers may not be needed at this time.  However, later folks will be needed to "re-build" this nation struck by a terrible disaster.

I have friends who are in The Salvation Army, a Christian organization built on serving God by serving others.

Haiti was once one of the top tourist destinations in the Caribbean. Cruise ships regularly stopped at the capital, Port-Au-Prince, allowing visitors to admire the Cathedrals and other sights. Tourists would browse for paintings and hand-crafted sculptures or simply relax on one of the many beautiful beaches.

In the past 20 years, however, because of political instability or even the cultural practices of things like Voodoo, tourists have 'stayed away' and the resulting effect on the economy has been devastating. Around 80 per cent of the population lives in abject  poverty, almost one in every hundred children won’t make it to adulthood and the average life expectancy is only 47. It is often referred to as the poorest country in the western hemisphere.

I've had the opportunity to vacation in the Dominican Republic, next to Haiti, and it is really, really beautiful there in the Dominican Republic area.  However, Haiti is really run-down, and this earthquake tragedy will likely kill hundreds of thousands of people and cost millions of dollars.  Death estimates are currently 100,000 to 500,000 dead.  See why we need to pray?

When I was leaving the Dominican Republic, a woman offered to "sell" me her baby for $4,000, so that her child could grow up in the United States.  $4,000 is about a year's wages, I believe.  The tour guide warned us not to buy any babies on the way back to the U.S..

In the midst of all the gloom there is good news. The Salvation Army has been working in Haiti since 1950 and continues to have a huge impact on the lives of some of the world’s poorest people. They've been there for 50 years and the people in Haiti love them. One of the programs on Haiti deals with the problem of restaveks children who have to work as domestic helpers. Sometimes they are referred to simply as slave children.

The Hatian children often come from poor rural families and are literally given to wealthier families with the hope that they will receive care. In return, the child does menial tasks around the house such as sweeping, cleaning and carrying water. Often they are not educated or even allowed to eat with the rest of the family. They are not offered a normal childhood and very seldom are they allowed time off to play and enjoy their young lives. Most slave children are treated with indifference at best and often with extreme cruelty. If they do not work hard enough or misbehave they can be beaten severely. They have no recourse.

The Salvation Army in Port-au-Prince provides 50 such children with a daily break from their dreary existence. They go to the Army clinic, enjoy a meal, learn simple first aid and health fundamentals, make crafts and share in playtime. Since none of these children go to school they also have the opportunity to take part in simple literacy classes.

Using comic books The Salvation Army course content includes information on diarrarhea and oral rehydration, parasites such as worms, hygiene, the growth of a child, vaccination, malaria, coughing and accidents at home and around the house.

After following the first three months of a three-year after-school program, children are awarded a badge and become ‘scouts for health’, making a pledge to share their new knowledge. The older children will also benefit from a 10-week course on HIV/Aids.

During the course the children are encouraged to gain knowledge of how to treat common conditions within their own community. They are taught, for instance, how to prepare a simple oral re-hydration drink and teach others how to prepare it. In the long term, these basic health courses could save many lives, but the emphasis this week is on saving lives that may be hidden under the rubble of fallen buildings.

In many areas of Haiti the problem of Aids orphans is equivalent to that found in Africa, where BOB-FM is active in Ministry and has built 8 Christian Radio Stations. (See http://www.africapublicradio.com for more informatin on our stations.)  The Salvation Army has established a program for Aids orphans. The program involves bringing together orphans in an 'after-school' club. There they receive a healthy meal, followed by help with homework and psycho-social support through games, counselling and advice. This bringing together of children helps them to understand better from each other how to deal with their specific circumstances. It also reduces the sense of isolation and stigma which can sometimes be associated with HIV/Aids.

Another important aspect of the program is the development of skills in agriculture. To that end, The Army has developed vegetable gardens at each center that not only provides nutritious food for the groups but also train them in vital income-generating skills for later life.  All these programs are now in trouble because of the earthquake!

The Salvation Army in Haiti is seizing opportunities to work with the young people of Haiti to build a better future. Now that their country has been hit by a hugh earthquake, The Army has to help folks hit by tragedy, and re-build their own facillities at the same time.  As for me, my money would go to The Salvation Army.  I'm told that we can donate to The Army "in general" to their general fund, or we can specify that our funds, at the time, go to Haiti recovery.

We all should pray, I believe, and then donate our time, our support and financial donations as the Holy Spirit leads us.

God bless you,
Big Ed Brady
