Pray Daily - and try a "Better Way to Pray"

A Better Way To Pray By Andrew Wommack  - more info on Andrew's ministry on-line at http://www.awmi.net

I thought that you would find this interesting and helpful.

Thanks for listening and for your prayers!

God bless you, Pastor Ed Brady,
BOB-106.1-FM, Spirit-95.9-FM

Decades ago, I (Andrew Wommack) was participating in an all-night prayer meeting bombarding the gates of heaven. I remember beating the wall and yelling, “God, if You loved the people in Arlington, Texas, half as much as I do, we’d have revival!” Immediately, my lightning-fast mind realized that something was seriously wrong with my theology. What was I thinking?

Did I (Andrew Womack) really believe I loved these people more than God did? No, not exactly. Like many Christians, I believed God was angry with the human condition, and it was up to me to turn Him from wrath and judgment. I was interceding, or so I thought, pleading with God on the behalf of others. What could possibly be wrong with that? As I learned later, a lot.

The things the Lord has revealed to me about prayer since then have totally changed my life, and I’m now seeing miraculous results. If you aren’t getting the results you know the Lord wants you to have, maybe it’s time to consider a better way to pray. I’m not saying that anyone who doesn’t pray as I do is “of the devil.” I wasn’t “of the devil” in the way I used to pray. I loved God with all my heart, and the Lord loved me. But the results weren’t there.

First, we need to recognize that God isn’t angry at mankind anymore. He is no longer imputing or holding our sins against us.

“God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation” (2 Cor. 5:19).

We are NOW reconciled to God through Jesus. That means we are in harmony and are friendly with God right now. He isn’t mad; He’s not even in a bad mood. The war between God and man is over. That’s what the angels proclaimed at the birth of Jesus.

Luke 2:14 says,

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”

These angels weren’t saying that peace would reign on earth and that wars between people would cease. That certainly hasn’t happened. They were proclaiming the end of war between God and man. Jesus paid a price that was infinitely greater than the sins of the whole human race.

God’s wrath and justice have been satisfied. Jesus changed everything. God isn’t angry. His mercy extends to all people. He loves the world, not just the church, but the whole world. He paid for all sin.

The Scriptures say in 1 John 2:2,

“And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”

In the Old Testament, God’s judgment was poured out on both individuals and nations. In the New Testament, God’s judgment was poured out on Jesus. That is the nearly-too-good-to-be-true news of the Gospel. We no longer get what we deserve; we get what Jesus paid the price for, if we will only believe.

Before I understood this, I would say, “If God doesn’t judge America, He will have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah.” Now I say, “If God judges America, He will have to apologize to Jesus.” Understanding what Jesus did completely changes our perspective.

Second, Jesus is now the Mediator. A mediator is one who seeks to reconcile, or make peace between, two opposing parties. In the Old Testament, man had not yet been reconciled to God through Jesus. The people needed a mediator, someone to intercede with God on their behalf. That is where we find people like Abraham and Moses pleading with God.

In Genesis 18:23-25, Abraham interceded with God on behalf of Sodom and Gomorrah:

“Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked? Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein? That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”

In fact, Abraham actually negotiated with God until He agreed not to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah for the sake of ten righteous people. But there weren’t ten righteous people in the whole city, and only some of Lot’s family survived. A similar account is recorded in Exodus 32:9-12 and 14. Here God was furious with the people, and Moses interceded for them:

“The LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation. And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand? Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people…And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.”

Moses actually told God, “Repent!” What nerve! What’s more amazing is that God repented. From these and other stories in the Old Testament, modern-day “intercessors” believe we, too, must stand in the gap, or mediate, between God and man. Just as I did decades ago, they believe we must plead with God to save the lost, to withhold His wrath from those He is ready to judge, and to be merciful to those whose needs He is unwilling to meet because of their unworthiness.

That couldn’t be further from the truth, but it is what’s being taught in many churches today. It ignores the fact that Jesus is now seated at the right hand of the Father (Heb. 10:12), ever making intercession for us (Heb. 7:25). If Moses or Abraham could persuade God, don’t you think Jesus could do at least as well?

In 1 Timothy 2:5, we read,

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

In the New Covenant, Jesus is the ONLY mediator needed to stand between God the Father and mankind. Sin is no longer a problem with God;it’s been atoned for, and we are now the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. That is how God sees us. If we understand that, it will change the way we pray.

It was appropriate for Abraham and Moses to pray as they did because God’s wrath had not yet been appeased through Jesus. Today, under the New Covenant, if people try to mediate in that way, they are actually antichrist—against Christ. They are saying that Jesus was not enough and are not esteeming what Christ has done. When Jesus became our Mediator, He put all other mediators out of business—forever. I know these words are strong, but they are the truth.

Satan is behind much of the wrong teaching on “prayer.” Consider how crafty his plan is and the fruit it produces. He has convinced believers to stay in their closets, taking the place of Jesus in intercession. They spend hours pleading with God to turn from His wrath, to pour out His Spirit, and to meet the needs of the people.

Meanwhile, families, coworkers, and neighbors are going to hell and dying from disease. The Bible doesn’t say that salvation comes through intercession, but by the foolishness of preaching (1 Cor. 1:21). And we are not told to pray for the sick, but to heal the sick (Matt. 10:8) by commanding healing into their broken bodies.

We have been deceived into believing prayer is all about persuading God to release His power. We believe He can save, heal, and deliver but that He is waiting on us to shape up and earn it. The truth is, we don’t deserve it, and we will never be good enough. Because of Jesus, all that God has is ours. That’s good news. We no longer need to beg or plead; we need to exercise the authority He has given us and receive His blessings.

There really is a better way to pray. I am not saying it’s the only way, but it is working for me. I have only touched on this subject in this letter, so I encourage you to order my book, A Better Way to Pray.

This message is also available in a CD or DVD album. In the book and albums, I talk about the primary purpose of prayer; the importance of speaking to your mountain about God, not to God about your mountain; the process of prayer; and I reveal many of the misconceptions about prayer.

These truths have changed the way I pray and the results I get. More importantly, I believe they could revolutionize the body of Christ. I pray that you will take advantage of these truths and help me share them with others.

Dear friends,
I hope that this has inspired you and helped your prayer to be "more" effective.

Sometimes my prayers have simply been, "Thank you, Jesus" or "Help me, Jesus" - Prayer doesn't have to be fancy.   Just talk to God like I'm talking to you, through these words on this page.

We must "honor" our employers... The Bible says so.
Posted 8/8/2010

Dear Friends,

Did you know that the Bible tells us to "Obey Our Boss" at work?

I'd like to add a comment to Mike Murdock's article below.  One thing that I've learned, personally, by obeying my Bosses at work is this: By "submitting" to their authority at work, I've learned to "submit" my will to my Father in heaven.  I want to do whatever God asks me to do, and as long as our employers don't ask us to do anything immoral or illegal, we are to "honor" them by submitting to their authority.

Going to Church won't save you... but it sure helps! by Pastor Ed Brady
Posted 8/1/2010

There has never been a time in history in which it was more important to become connected to a church. This is true both for families and for individuals.

A life-filled, Bible-teaching church is a refuge in stormy times, an anchor of stability in a world that seems to have lost all moorings. It is also a base from which to go out and effect positive change.

If you don't have a church yet, let me invite you to try the church in Brooklyn Park where Mrs. Brady and I attend: Living Word Christian Center (More info: http://www.lwcc.org )

Of course, there are many fine churches in the Twin Cities area.

Churches that can strengthen your family, offer a place to render meaningful service to others, and provide a safe haven from those cultural storms that rage around us here at the opening of a new millennium.

As an Ordained Minister, I've pastored various churches in Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois before coming here to the Twin Cities.  On my way here, I heard God tell me that He had a new, "Special Ministry" for me here.  That turned out to be "Sonrise with Pastor Ed" heard every Sunday morning, 6am-8am on WLKX-"Spirit-95.9-FM" ...AND... "Country Gospel" heard 8am-10am on KLCI-"BOB-106.1-FM" radio.

I recommend that you find and attend a church home (and insist that your children and grand-children attend church also). My encouragement to you is to get involved in your church and support it with your time, talents and resources.

But if you are not currently involved in a church, The "Key" things to look for are that they focus on Jesus as our Lord and Savior, that they preach from the BIBLE without changing it, and that you feel "loved" by going there and not "guilty" for having sinned.

You see, the purpose of this blogis not an attempt to convince you to come to the church where I attend, Living Word. It is merely an effort to give you the information you need to make an informed decision about whether to take the next step.

When the Holy Spirit "leads" you to a church, visit a few times - giving the Spirit of God ample opportunity to show you whether or not this is the place you can best serve and be served.

Some key elements of Faith you should look for in a church:

  • All Scripture, the canonical books of the Old and New Testaments, are the inspired Word of God, without error, revealed for the salvation of man, and therefore, the source and guide for faith, doctrine and life.
  • God is One and the Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
  • The Lord Jesus Christ is God, the second person of the Trinity. He, though existing from all eternity with God and as God, humbled Himself and was born of a virgin. He lived a sinless life, being both fully human and fully divine. He performed miracles that attested His deity, and died on the cross, shedding His blood as a substitutionary and atoning death for our salvation. He was bodily raised from the dead and physically ascended to the right hand of the Father. He will bodily return to the earth in power and glory to bring judgment to those who have rejected Him, glorification to the saints, and salvation to Israel.
  • Adam and Eve were the first humans and were 'created' in the image of God, but were tempted by Satan and fell, thus plunging all mankind into sin and spiritual darkness causing all of humanity to be separated from God. Because of this, we must be saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.  Ask God to 'fill you with the Holy Spirit" because regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely necessary to "hear from God" and to let God lead, guide and direct you in His plan for your life.
  • The atoning death and resurrection of Jesus Christ provide the only means for justification and salvation for all who believe. Salvation is 'by grace through faith' for those who truly repent of their sins and place their trust fully in Christ. They gladly confess Him as Lord and Savior. Those who are saved have been born again by the power of the Holy Spirit and become true children of God.
  • The Lord has commanded us to be baptized in water to demonstrate our new life in Him and to remember His sacrificial death through the Lord's Supper. These practices, however, are not to be regarded as means of salvation. The Bible teaches us that you should be Baptized "after" receiving the Holy Spirit, even if you were Baptized as a baby.
  • The gifts of the Holy Spirit are given to all members of the body of Christ as the Spirit wills. The purpose of the gifts is for the edification of the body of Christ. The presence of gifts is for honoring God by humbly serving His people, and do not prove a superior spirituality or Christian maturity. When there is doubt in your mind, search the Scriptures for the real truth.
  • It is important for us to honor God, honor our Father and Mother, and honor Irael as God's Chosen People. (Pray that our Government of the U.S.A. support Israel, because our nation willbe blessed if we do, but cursed if we do not.) We affirm the continued place of national Israel in God’s plan. There will be a literal rapture of the church, great tribulation, followed by the bodily return of Christ to bring judgment upon the nations and salvation to Israel. He will then set up a 1,000 year millennial reign in Jerusalem followed by the final judgment. Saved Christians have an obligation to "go tell" others about Jesus and bring them into His Kingdom.  As you love Jesus, and put Him first in your life, teach others (especially your children and grand-children to do the same).

"Going to Church"
Posted 7/25/2010

When I was young, the idea of "Going to Church" was great because it was a "family" activity.

However, there were phases of my life were "Going to Church" was a chore, a burden, or something I felt I "had" to do.

If that's where you're at, ask the Holy Spirit if your a member of the right church.  If you know that you're where God wants you to be, then stay there.  But, if you're at a church because your parents went there, or because that's where you've always been a member, then ask the Holy Spirit if you should look elsewhere.

If you are a "member" of a church, but haven't been there for a "long" time, that is a clear sign that you need a church where you "look forward" to going to church.

This isn't a promo for my church, where Mrs. Brady and I attend, but I use our church as an example of one where we "look forward" to going to church.

We're members of the Living Word Christian Center in Brooklyn Park (north of I-694 at Boone Exit).  The main pastors are Lynn and Mac Hammond, but this weekend our church had a special guest speaker, Larry Hutton, who used to be part of the Kenneth E. Hagin ministries, when Brother Hagin was still alive. We sent Friday night at 7pm, again Saturday at 5pm and we're going again tonight at 6:30pm to hear God speak to us through the Worship at LWCC.

For more information on our church, visit the Webiste http://www.lwcc.org.

I spent hours and hours this past week with ANDREW WOMMACK
Posted 7/18/2010

Hi friends,

This past week, I attended a "Gospel Truth Seminar" featuring Andrew Wommack.

Andrew has been in ministry for 40 years, but I only discovered his TV and Radio ministry about 3-4 years ago.  (He's on Spirit-95.9-FM every M-F at 9:30am and 7pm to 7:15pm.)  Tune in and enjoy.  And, he is on TV on TBN, Daystar, Inspiration Networks.

His voice is unique (and very nasal), but his messages about God and God's love for us are really life-changing for me and other folks too.  He's very "BOLD" about his love for Jesus and offends some people, but I'd rather he offend people than offend God.

A Nation That Honors God
Posted 7/4/2010

We need to re-claim the U.S.A. as a Christian Nation!

Even though our President, Barak Obama, says that this is a Christian Nation... It really is!  Founded by Christians, based on the truth in The Bible.

Proof of that is available at the the Website of David Barton:
http://www.wallbuilders.com .
David Barton - 04/2009

Is President Obama Correct:
Is America No Longer a Christian Nation?

by David Barton

Over the past several years, President Barack Obama has repeatedly claimed that America is not a Christian nation. He asserted that while a U. S. Senator, 1 repeated it as a presidential candidate, 2 and on a recent presidential trip to Turkey announced to the world that Americans “do not consider ourselves a Christian nation.” 3 (He made that announcement in Turkey because he said it was “a location he said he chose to send a clear message.” 4 ) Then preceding a subsequent trip to Egypt, he declared that America was “one of the largest Muslim countries in the world” 5 (even though the federal government’s own statistics show that less than one-percent of Americans are Muslims. 6

The President’s statements were publicized across the world but received little attention in the American media. Had they been carried here, the President might have been surprised to learn that nearly two-thirds of Americans currently consider America to be a Christian nation 7 and therefore certainly might have taken exception with his remarks. But regardless of what today’s Americans might think, it is unquestionable that four previous centuries of American leaders would definitely take umbrage with the President’s statements.

Modern claims that America is not a Christian nation are rarely noticed or refuted today because of the nation’s widespread lack of knowledge about America’s history and foundation. To help provide the missing historical knowledge necessary to combat today’s post-modern revisionism, presented below will be some statements by previous presidents, legislatures, and courts (as well as by current national Jewish spokesmen) about America being a Christian nation. These declarations from all three branches of government are representative of scores of others and therefore comprise only the proverbial “tip of the iceberg.”

Defining a Christian Nation

Contemporary post-modern critics (including President Obama) who assert that America is not a Christian nation always refrain from offering any definition of what the term “Christian nation” means. So what is an accurate definition of that term as demonstrated by the American experience?

Contrary to what critics imply, a Christian nation is not one in which all citizens are Christians, or the laws require everyone to adhere to Christian theology, or all leaders are Christians, or any other such superficial measurement. As Supreme Court Justice David Brewer (1837-1910) explained:

[I]n what sense can [America] be called a Christian nation? Not in the sense that Christianity is the established religion or that the people are in any manner compelled to support it. On the contrary, the Constitution specifically provides that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Neither is it Christian in the sense that all its citizens are either in fact or name Christians. On the contrary, all religions have free scope within our borders. Numbers of our people profess other religions, and many reject all. Nor is it Christian in the sense that a profession of Christianity is a condition of holding office or otherwise engaging in public service, or essential to recognition either politically or socially. In fact, the government as a legal organization is independent of all religions. Nevertheless, we constantly speak of this republic as a Christian nation – in fact, as the leading Christian nation of the world. 8

So, if being a Christian nation is not based on any of the above criterion, then what makes America a Christian nation? According to Justice Brewer, America was “of all the nations in the world . . . most justly called a Christian nation” because Christianity “has so largely shaped and molded it.” 9

Constitutional law professor Edward Mansfield (1801-1880) similarly acknowledged:

In every country, the morals of a people – whatever they may be – take their form and spirit from their religion. For example, the marriage of brothers and sisters was permitted among the Egyptians because such had been the precedent set by their gods, Isis and Osiris. So, too, the classic nations celebrated the drunken rites of Bacchus. Thus, too, the Turk has become lazy and inert because dependent upon Fate, as taught by the Koran. And when in recent times there arose a nation [i.e., France] whose philosophers [e.g. Voltaire, Rousseau, Diderot, Helvetius, etc.] discovered there was no God and no religion, the nation was thrown into that dismal case in which there was no law and no morals. . . . In the United States, Christianity is the original, spontaneous, and national religion. 10

Founding Father and U. S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall agreed:

[W]ith us, Christianity and religion are identified. It would be strange, indeed, if with such a people our institutions did not presuppose Christianity and did not often refer to it and exhibit relations with it. 11

Christianity is the religion that shaped America and made her what she is today. In fact, historically speaking, it can be irrefutably demonstrated that Biblical Christianity in America produced many of the cherished traditions still enjoyed today, including:

  • A republican rather than a theocratic form of government;
  • The institutional separation of church and state (as opposed to today’s enforced institutional secularization of church and state);
  • Protection for religious toleration and the rights of conscience;
  • A distinction between theology and behavior, thus allowing the incorporation into public policy of religious principles that promote good behavior but which do not enforce theological tenets (examples of this would include religious teachings such as the Good Samaritan, The Golden Rule, the Ten Commandments, the Sermon on the Mount, etc., all of which promote positive civil behavior but do not impose ecclesiastical rites); and
  • A free-market approach to religion, thus ensuring religious diversity.

Consequently, a Christian nation as demonstrated by the American experience is a nation founded upon Christian and Biblical principles, whose values, society, and institutions have largely been shaped by those principles. This definition was reaffirmed by American legal scholars and historians for generations 12 but is widely ignored by today’s revisionists.

With his recent statement, President Barack Obama is the first American president to deny that America is a Christian nation – a repudiation of what made America great and a refutation of the declarations of his presidential predecessors. Notice a few representative statements on this subject by some of the forty-three previous presidents:

The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were. . . . the general principles of Christianity. 13 JOHN ADAMS

[T]he teachings of the Bible are so interwoven and entwined with our whole civic and social life that it would be literally….impossible for us to figure to ourselves what that life would be if these teaching were removed. 14 TEDDY ROOSEVELT

America was born a Christian nation – America was born to exemplify that devotion to the elements of righteousness which are derived from the revelations of Holy Scripture. 15 WOODROW WILSON

American life is builded, and can alone survive, upon . . . [the] fundamental philosophy announced by the Savior nineteen centuries ago. 16 HERBERT HOOVER

This is a Christian Nation. 17 HARRY TRUMAN

Let us remember that as a Christian nation . . . we have a charge and a destiny. 18 RICHARD NIXON

There are many additional examples, including even that of Thomas Jefferson.

Significantly, Jefferson was instrumental in establishing weekly Sunday worship services at the U. S. Capitol (a practice that continued through the 19th century) and was himself a regular and faithful attendant at those church services, 19 not even allowing inclement weather to dissuade his weekly horseback travel to the Capitol church. 20

(The fact that the U. S. Capitol building was available for church on Sundays was due to the Art. I, Sec. 7 constitutional requirement that forbade federal lawmaking on Sundays; and this recognition of a Christian Sabbath in the U. S. Constitution was cited by federal courts as proof of the Christian nature of America. 21 While not every Christian observes a Sunday Sabbath, no other religion in the world honors Sunday except Christianity. As one court noted, the various Sabbaths were “the Friday of the Mohammedan, the Saturday of the Israelite, or the Sunday of the Christian.” 22 )

Why was Jefferson a faithful attendant at the Sunday church at the Capitol? He once explained to a friend while they were walking to church together:

No nation has ever existed or been governed without religion. Nor can be. The Christian religion is the best religion that has been given to man and I, as Chief Magistrate of this nation, am bound to give it the sanction of my example. 23

President Jefferson even closed presidential documents with “In the year of our Lord Christ” (see below).

Even President Jefferson recognized and treated America as a Christian nation. Clearly, President Obama’s declaration is refuted both by history and by his own presidential predecessors.

Declarations from the Legislative Branch affirming America as a Christian nation are abundant. For example, in 1852-1853 when some citizens sought a complete secularization of the public square and a cessation of all religious activities by the government, Congress responded with unambiguous declarations about America as a Christian nation:

HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE: Had the people, during the Revolution, had a suspicion of any attempt to war against Christianity, that Revolution would have been strangled in its cradle. At the time of the adoption of the Constitution and the amendments, the universal sentiment was that Christianity should be encouraged, not any one sect [denomination]. Any attempt to level and discard all religion would have been viewed with universal indignation. . . . In this age there can be no substitute for Christianity; that, in its general principles, is the great conservative element on which we must rely for the purity and permanence of free institutions. 24

SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE: We are Christians, not because the law demands it, not to gain exclusive benefits or to avoid legal disabilities, but from choice and education; and in a land thus universally Christian, what is to be expected, what desired, but that we shall pay a due regard to Christianity? 25

In 1856, the House of Representatives also declared:

[T]he great vital and conservative element in our system is the belief of our people in the pure doctrines and divine truths of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 26

On March 3, 1863 while in the midst of the Civil War, the U. S. Senate requested President Abraham Lincoln to “designate and set apart a day for national prayer and humiliation” 27 because:

[S]incerely believing that no people, however great in numbers and resources or however strong in the justice of their cause, can prosper without His favor; and at the same time deploring the national offences which have provoked His righteous judgment, yet encouraged in this day of trouble by the assurances of His word to seek Him for succor according to His appointed way through Jesus Christ, the Senate of the United States do hereby request the President of the United States, by his proclamation, to designate and set apart a day for national prayer and humiliation. 28 (emphasis added)

President Lincoln quickly complied with that request, 29 and issued what today has become one of the most famous and quoted proclamations in America’s history. 30

Across the generations, our national reliance on God, the Bible, and Christianity has been repeatedly reaffirmed. In fact, consider five representative images produced by the U. S. Government. The first three are from World War II: one shows the Nazis as the enemy because they want to attack the Bible, and the other two encourage Americans to buy War Bonds by pointing to Christian images. The fourth and fifth images are from the Department of Agriculture in the 1960s, using the Bible and even Smokey Bear in prayer as symbols to encourage Americans to be conscious of fire safety and to help preserve and conserve nature.

There are scores of other official actions by the U. S. Congress over the past two centuries affirming that America is a Christian nation.

From the Judicial Branch, consider first some declarations of prominent U. S. Supreme Court Justices regarding America as a Christian nation.

Justice Joseph Story (1779-1845) was appointed to the Court by President James Madison. Story is considered the founder of Harvard Law School and authored the three-volume classic Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (1833). In his 34 years on the Court, Story authored opinions in 286 cases, of which 269 were reported as the majority opinion or the opinion of the Court 31 and his many contributions to American law have caused him to be called a “Father of American Jurisprudence.” Justice Story openly declared:

One of the beautiful boasts of our municipal jurisprudence is that Christianity is a part of the Common Law. . . . There never has been a period in which the Common Law did not recognize Christianity as lying at its foundations. . . . I verily believe Christianity necessary to the support of civil society. 32

His conclusion about America and Christianity was straightforward:

In [our] republic, there would seem to be a peculiar propriety in viewing the Christian religion as the great basis on which it must rest for its support and permanence. 33

Justice John McLean (1785-1861) was appointed to the Court by President Andrew Jackson. McLean served in the U. S. Congress, as a judge on the Ohio Supreme Court, and then held cabinet positions under two U. S. Presidents. His view on the importance of Christianity to American government and its institutions was unambiguous:

For many years, my hope for the perpetuity of our institutions has rested upon Bible morality and the general dissemination of Christian principles. This is an element which did not exist in the ancient republics. It is a basis on which free governments may be maintained through all time. . . . Free government is not a self-moving machine. . . . Our mission of freedom is not carried out by brute force, by canon law, or any other law except the moral law and those Christian principles which are found in the Scriptures. 34

Justice David Brewer (1837-1910), appointed to the Court by President Benjamin Harrison, agreed. Brewer held several judgeships in Kansas and served on a federal circuit court before his appointment to the Supreme Court. Justice Brewer declared:

We constantly speak of this republic as a Christian nation – in fact, as the leading Christian nation of the world. 35

Brewer then chronicled the types of descriptions applied to nations:

We classify nations in various ways: as, for instance, by their form of government. One is a kingdom, another an empire, and still another a republic. Also by race. Great Britain is an Anglo-Saxon nation, France a Gallio, Germany a Teutonic, Russia a Slav. And still again by religion. One is a Mohammedan nation, others are heathen, and still others are Christian nations. This republic is classified among the Christian nations of the world. It was so formally declared by the Supreme Court of the United States. In the case of Holy Trinity Church vs. United States, 143 U.S. 471, that Court, after mentioning various circumstances, added, “these and many other matters which might be noticed, add a volume of unofficial declarations to the mass of organic utterances that this is a Christian nation.” 36

Brewer did not believe that calling America a Christian nation was a hollow appellation; in fact, he penned an entire book setting forth the evidence that America was a Christian nation. He concluded:

[I] have said enough to show that Christianity came to this country with the first colonists; has been powerfully identified with its rapid development, colonial and national, and today exists as a mighty factor in the life of the republic. This is a Christian nation. . . . [T]he calling of this republic a Christian nation is not a mere pretence, but a recognition of an historical, legal, and social truth. 37

Justice Earl Warren (1891-1974) agreed with his predecessors. Before being appointed as Chief Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Warren had been the Attorney General of California. Warren declared:

I believe the entire Bill of Rights came into being because of the knowledge our forefathers had of the Bible and their belief in it: freedom of belief, of expression, of assembly, of petition, the dignity of the individual, the sanctity of the home, equal justice under law, and the reservation of powers to the people. . . . I like to believe we are living today in the spirit of the Christian religion. I like also to believe that as long as we do so, no great harm can come to our country. 38

There are many similar declarations by other Supreme Court Justices, but in addition to the declarations of individual judges, the federal courts have repeatedly affirmed America to be a Christian nation – including the U. S. Supreme Court, which declared that America was “a Christian country,” 39 filled with “Christian people,” 40 and was indeed “a Christian nation.” 41 Dozens of other courts past and present have repeated these pronouncements 42 but so, too, have American Presidents – as in 1947 when President Harry Truman quoted the Supreme Court, declaring:

This is a Christian Nation. More than a half century ago that declaration was written into the decrees of the highest court in this land [in an 1892 decision]. 43

In addition to its “Christian nation” declarations, the Supreme Court also regularly relied on Christian principles as the basis of its rulings on issues such as marriage, citizenship, foreign affairs, and domestic treaties.

For example, when some federal territories attempted to introduce the practice of bigamy and polygamy, the Supreme Court disallowed those practices because:

Bigamy and polygamy are crimes by the laws of all civilized and Christian countries. 44

In another case, the Court similarly explained:

The organization of a community for the spread and practice of polygamy is . . . . contrary to the spirit of Christianity and of the civilization which Christianity has produced in the Western world. 45

And when the issue arose of whether marriages made in foreign nations would be recognized in the United States, the federal court held that foreign marriages would be recognized only if they were not “contrary to the general view of Christendom.” 46

The Supreme Court also decided military service issues in accord with Christian principles and standards. For example, in 1931, when a Canadian immigrant refused to take the oath of allegiance to the United States, the Supreme Court explained why he was therefore excluded from citizenship:

We are a Christian people (Holy Trinity Church v. United States. 143 U.S. 457, 470 , 471 S., 12 S. Ct. 511), according to one another the equal right of religious freedom and acknowledging with reverence the duty of obedience to the will of God. But also we are a nation with the duty to survive; a nation whose Constitution contemplates war as well as peace; whose government must go forward upon the assumption (and safely can proceed upon no other) that unqualified allegiance to the nation and submission and obedience to the laws of the land, as well those made for war as those made for peace, are not inconsistent with the will of God. 47

The Supreme Court also relied on Christian principles in its rulings on international policies. For example, if an American citizen living in a foreign land was accused of a crime under the laws of a fundamentally different nation (such as in Islamic nations, secular nations, and most recently in Japan following World War II), by means of international treaties, the U. S. citizen would be tried in front of the U. S. Consul in that nation (in what were called Consular Tribunals) rather than before the courts of that country. Of this practice, the Supreme Court explained:

In other than Christian countries, they [the Consuls] were by treaty stipulations usually clothed with authority to hear complaints against their countrymen and to sit in judgment upon them when charged with public offenses. . . . The intense hostility of the people of Moslem faith to all other sects, and particularly to Christians, affected all their intercourse [transactions] and all proceedings had in their tribunals. Even the rules of evidence adopted by them [the Muslims] placed those of different faith on unequal grounds in any controversy with them. For this cause, and by reason of the barbarous and cruel punishments inflicted in those countries and the frequent use of torture to enforce confession from parties accused, it was a matter of deep interest to Christian governments to withdraw the trial of their subjects, when charged with the commission of a public offense, from the arbitrary and despotic action of the local officials. Treaties conferring such jurisdiction upon these consuls were essential to the peaceful residence of Christians within those countries. 48

For example, an Islamic nation might charge an American with the capital-offense crime of blasphemy merely because the American attended Christian worship or used a Bible in that country; or a secular nation might accuse an American of the crime of proselytizing simply for sharing his faith with another (currently a crime in France, 49 across India, 50 Pakistan, 51 Saudi Arabia, 52 Malaysia, 53 and many other nations). In such cases, the Consul tried the offense under America’s laws as a Christian nation. However, if another nation accused an American of a crime such as murder, the charge would stand since murder was also a crime in our Christian nation. 54

The Supreme Court commended this position 55 and federal courts observed the policy until deep into the twentieth century, 56 when many foreign nations finally began to adopt what the Supreme Court had earlier called “a system of judicial procedure like that of Christian countries.” 57

Federal domestic treaties were yet another area in which the federal judiciary relied on Christian principles and standards. For example, by 1877 a number of disputes had arisen in which Indian lands were wrongly being taken for timber, minerals, and other resources. When those cases reached the Supreme Court, the Court affirmed the occupancy rights of the tribes to the lands because:

It is to be presumed that in this matter the United States would be governed by such considerations of justice as would control a Christian people . . . 58

The Court repeated this position on numerous subsequent occasions – as in 1903 when it reiterated:

[I]n decisions of this court, the Indian right of occupancy of tribal lands, whether declared in a treaty or otherwise created, has been stated to be sacred. . . . Thus. . . . “It is to be presumed that in this matter the United States would be governed by such considerations of justice as would control a Christian people . . . ” 59

The Court’s position was subsequently enacted into federal statutory law in 1906, 60 and in 1955, the Supreme Court was still praising this position 61 – a position regularly cited by other courts for decades, 62 including in the late 1990s. 63

These are just a few examples of the literally hundreds of similar cases at both federal and state levels affirming that America is indeed a Christian nation.

Jewish leaders, although firmly committed to their own faith, understand that by defending Christianity they are defending what has provided them their own religious liberty in America. For example, Jeff Jacoby, a Jewish columnist at the Boston Globe explains:

This is a Christian country – it was founded by Christians and built on broad Christian principles. Threatening? Far from it. It is in precisely this Christian country that Jews have known the most peaceful, prosperous, and successful existence in their long history. 64

Aaron Zelman (a Jewish author and head of a civil rights organization) similarly declares:

[C]hristian America is the best home our people have found in 2,000 years. . . . [T]his remains the most tolerant, prosperous, and safest home we could be blessed with. 65

Dennis Prager, a Jewish national columnist and popular talkshow host, warns:

If America abandons its Judeo-Christian values basis and the central role of the Jewish and Christian Bibles (its Founders’ guiding text), we are all in big trouble, including, most especially, America’s non-Christians. Just ask the Jews of secular Europe. 66

Prager further explained:

I believe that it is good that America is a Christian nation. . . . I have had the privilege of speaking in nearly every Jewish community in America over the last 30 years, and I have frequently argued in favor of this view. Recently, I spoke to the Jewish community of a small North Carolina city. When some in the audience mentioned their fear of rising religiosity among Christians, I asked these audience-members if they loved living in their city. All of them said they did. Is it a coincidence, I then asked, that the city you so love (for its wonderful people, its safety for your children, its fine schools, and its values that enable you to raise your children with confidence) is a highly Christian city? Too many Americans do not appreciate the connection between American greatness and American Christianity. 67

Don Feder, a Jewish columnist and long time writer for the Boston Herald, similarly acknowledges:

Clearly this nation was established by Christians. . . . As a Jew, I’m entirely comfortable with the concept of the Christian America. 68 The choice isn’t Christian America or nothing, but Christian America or a neo-pagan, hedonistic, rights-without-responsibilities, anti-family, culture-of-death America. As an American Jew. . . . [I] feel very much at home here. 69

In fact, Feder calls on Jews to defend the truth that America is a Christian Nation:

Jews – as Jews – must oppose revisionist efforts to deny our nation’s Christian heritage, must stand against the drive to decouple our laws from Judeo-Christian ethics, and must counter attacks on public expressions of the religion of most Americans – Christianity. Jews are safer in a Christian America than in a secular America. 70

Michael Medved, a Jewish national talkshow host and columnist, agrees that America is indeed a Christian nation:

The framers may not have mentioned Christianity in the Constitution but they clearly intended that charter of liberty to govern a society of fervent faith, freely encouraged by government for the benefit of all. Their noble and unprecedented experiment never involved a religion-free or faithless state but did indeed presuppose America’s unequivocal identity as a Christian nation. 71

Burt Prelutsky, a Jewish columnist for the Los Angeles Times (and a freelance writer for the New York Times, Washington Times, Sports Illustrated, and other national publications) and a patriotic Jewish American, gladly embraces America as a Christian nation and even resents the secularist post-modern attack on national Christian celebrations such as Christmas:

I never thought I’d live to see the day that Christmas would become a dirty word. . . .How is it, one well might ask, that in a Christian nation this is happening? And in case you find that designation objectionable, would you deny that India is a Hindu country, that Turkey is Muslim, that Poland is Catholic? That doesn’t mean those nations are theocracies. But when the overwhelming majority of a country’s population is of one religion, and most Americans happen to be one sort of Christian or another, only a darn fool would deny the obvious. . . . This is a Christian nation, my friends. And all of us are fortunate it is one, and that so many millions of Americans have seen fit to live up to the highest precepts of their religion. It should never be forgotten that, in the main, it was Christian soldiers who fought and died to defeat Nazi Germany and who liberated the concentration camps. Speaking as a member of a minority group – and one of the smaller ones at that – I say it behooves those of us who don’t accept Jesus Christ as our savior to show some gratitude to those who do, and to start respecting the values and traditions of the overwhelming majority of our fellow citizens, just as we keep insisting that they respect ours. Merry Christmas, my friends. 72

Orthodox Rabbi Daniel Lapin of the Jewish Policy Center unequivocally declares

[I] understand that I live . . . in a Christian nation, albeit one where I can follow my faith as long as it doesn’t conflict with the nation’s principles. The same option is open to all Americans and will be available only as long as this nation’s Christian roots are acknowledged and honored. 73

In fact, with foreboding he warns:

Without a vibrant and vital Christianity, America is doomed, and without America, the west is doomed. Which is why I, an Orthodox Jewish rabbi, devoted to Jewish survival, the Torah, and Israel am so terrified of American Christianity caving in. 74 God help Jews if America ever becomes a post-Christian society! Just think of Europe! 75

President Obama’s declaration that Americans “do not consider ourselves a Christian nation” is a repudiation of the declarations of the national leaders before him and is an unabashed attempt at historical revisionism. Of such efforts, Chief Justice William Rehnquist wisely observed, “no amount of repetition of historical errors . . . can make the errors true.” 76

Americans must now decide whether centuries of presidents, congresses, and courts are correct or whether President Obama is, but historical fact does not change merely because the President declares it.

The best antidote to the type of revisionism embodied by President Obama’s statement is for citizens (1) to know the truth of America’s history and (2) share that truth with others.

READ | Psalm 72 & Psalm 91 & Psalm 34

Because government is instituted by God as His minister for good (Rom. 13:4), it functions best when leaders honor and obey Him. Throughout Israel’s history, God commended those kings who obeyed His laws and worshiped Him alone. The course of the entire nation was influenced by each king’s beliefs and behavior. Since this principle is still applicable today, righteous leaders have a tremendous potential to affect their nations for good. The Lord will guide and support those who fear Him and seek His wisdom and direction for their decisions.

As important as rulers are in determining a nation’s future, its citizens also play a vital role, especially in democracies where leaders arise from within the populace. An unrighteous constituency rarely elects a godly leader. Yet Christians who share their faith and raise children in God’s ways can have a tremendous impact on their nation’s values and, thereby, on its choice of rulers.

When both leaders and citizens value the Word of God, laws will be enacted which line up with biblical principles and commands. Every instruction in scripture is given for our protection and benefit. By aligning our laws with God’s, justice will triumph as the helpless are protected, the guilty are punished, and the innocent are vindicated.

When comparing this ideal to your reality, you might feel discouraged. But no matter what the condition of a nation, you can make a difference in your circle of influence by living righteously in an evil culture and reaching out to share the good news of Christ with a world that has lost its way.

Pray for our President (and America's leaders) daily...
Posted 6/27/2010

As a Pastor, I recognize the "need" for daily prayer.

Today, I'd like to suggest that we pray daily for our President.  Whether you personally like, or dislike, President Barak Obama, it's important that we ask for God to bless him with Wisdom, discernment and a willingness to lead our nation in a way that pleases God.

Don't try to tell God to force our President to do "this" or "that" - But do pray that our President would be willing to open his mind and his heart to doing things the Lord's way.

Even some of the legislation which has passed under this President, God could cause him to have a 'change of heart' and if he's willing to do things God's ways, we could see a 'reversal' of the thousands of abortions that are performed daily on babies who are alive and well in the wombs of women here in America and around the world.  These babies are God's children and we must pray to protect them.

In fact, I'm praying that President Obama have a "Saul to Paul" conversion - which means that he would go from being a "persecutor" Christianity to a passionate "supporter" of the grace, love and glory of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.  I pray the same 'reversal' for the ACLU and Planned Parenthood - because "with God" all things are possible!  Believe it, by faith.

God could cause us to claim our heritage as a Christian Nation: See http://www.wallbuilders.com
God could cause our schools to welcome God back into the classroom - and push the devil out.

In His Love,
Pastor Ed Brady

Today’s Prayer

Father and Creator of All, we heard that Connecticut has now been hit with a violent storm. It seems that each day, there is new weather violence somewhere across our country, or in China, Brazil, France and elsewhere. We know that even the winds and the waves obey You. Please, Father, be with all who have suffered as a result of these devastations.  Amen.

Father, thank You for the United States and its government. I pray for the president, the national and local government, the judges, the policemen, the business leaders and all those who are in leadership positions in this country. Please protect them from the evil that is in the world and keep them safe and free from all harm.

You have promised to bless any nation that follows after You. Help us to live quiet and peaceful lives so that we can continue to spread the Good News of the Gospel throughout our land.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer Tools

The power of prayer should not be underestimated. James 5:16-18 declares, “…The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.”

God listens to prayers, answers prayers, and moves in response to prayers. ??Jesus taught, “…I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you” (Matt.17:20)

We are dedicated to providing new tools to our members to use as a catalyst to dedicated and disciplined prayer for our President, our nation, our leaders and our troops. Our tools are designed to be able to share with others so that our prayers on behalf of our nation multiply across the country.

As the Lord has promised, prayer will transform our nation by transforming individual lives, one heart at a time, and return us to our Christian roots as "One Nation Under God."

In Jesus' name, Amen.

It’s time to pray.

It’s time to pray for the leaders of our nation.  Help them to be willing to make choices that would be pleasing to God.

They need our prayers. The times are turbulent: economy in jeopardy, nations in conflict. How can leaders lead during these days of bail-outs and bombings? Only with God’s help.

Ask God to inspire, direct and protect the leaders of the United States. Use your worship time, family time and private time to ask God’s blessings on Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and all the men and women who serve and lead our country. It’s time to pray.

Let’s do just that.

"Father's Day" 2010 - Give your children a "Blessing"
Posted 6/20/2010

Father's Day - THE BLESSING"To get his good-night kiss he stood beside my chair one night,
And raised an eager face to me, a face with love alight.
As I gathered in my arms the son God gave to me,
I thanked the lad for being good, & hoped he’d always be.
His little arms crept around my neck, & then I heard him say,
Four simple words I shant forget, four words that made me pray.
They turned a mirror on my soul, on secrets no one knew.
They startled me. I hear them yet. He said, `I’ll be like you.’"

ILLUSTRATION. Fatherhood has changed a lot over the years. I heard this past week about a father being asked who was in charge at his home. He answered, "Well, my wife bosses the children. My children boss the dog & cat, & I can say anything I want to the geraniums.

A. Fatherhood may have changed a bit in our society, but I don’t think God’s perception of what the father is to be & do has changed.

So this morning I’d like for you to turn to the 27th chapter of Genesis, to the story of Isaac bestowing his blessing to Jacob. Of course, the blessing was intended for the oldest son, Esau. But through deception the blessing was given to Jacob instead.

As you may remember, Isaac & Rebecca had twin sons, Esau & Jacob, who were not anything alike. Esau was an outdoorsman with hairy arms & hands & he loved hunting & fishing. Jacob was more of a homebody, & spent a lot of time with his mother.

Now in the 27th chapter of Genesis, their father, Isaac, has grown old & blind, & he decides it is time to pass on the blessing to his oldest son.

Now a Jewish father’s blessing was a formal passing on of the father’s honor & authority to his oldest son. And since the oldest son was assuming the leadership responsibilities of the family or tribe, he also received a double share of his father’s possessions. So the bestowing of the blessing was a very important event indeed.

In vs’s 2-4 Isaac tells Esau, "I am now an old man & don’t know the day of my death. Now then, get your weapons - your quiver & bow - & go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me. Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like & bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my blessing before I die."

B. So Esau leaves, & while he is gone, Rebecca seizes the opportunity to secure the blessing for Jacob, who was her favorite. She quickly prepares some tasty food & tells Jacob to put on Esau’s best clothes. To help fool blind old Isaac, she puts goat skin on Jacob’s hands & arms to make them feel hairy. Then she sends him in with the food to ask for the blessing.

Listen to vs. 19, "Jacob said to his father, `I am Esau, your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please sit up & eat some of my game so that you may give me your blessing.’"

Now Isaac was suspicious because Jacob’s voice didn’t sound like Esau’s. So he asked, "How did you find it so quickly, my son?" Jacob replies, "The Lord your God gave me success."

Then vs. 21, "Isaac said to Jacob, `Come near so I can touch you, my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not.’ Jacob went close to his father Isaac, who touched him & said, `The voice is the

voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.’ He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he blessed him."

C. Now the blessing that was given is found in vs’s 27-29. "So he went to him & kissed him. When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes, he blessed him & said, `Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the Lord has blessed. May God give you of heaven’s dew & of earth’s richness - an abundance of grain & new wine.

"May nations serve you & peoples bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, & may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed & those who bless you be blessed."

After he received the blessing from his father, Jacob left. Shortly after, Esau came in with the game that he had killed & prepared, & was ready to receive his father’s blessing.

Listen to vs’s 33-34. "Isaac trembled violently & said, `Who was it, then, that hunted game & brought it to me? I ate it just before you came & I blessed him - & indeed he will be blessed!’ When Esau heard his father’s words, he burst out with a loud & bitter cry & said to his father, `Bless me - me too, my father!’"

ILL. Dr. Gary Smalley wrote a book entitled, "The Blessing." In it he examines the blessing that Isaac bestowed upon Jacob & he says, "The blessing contains 4 ingredients that ought to be present in every home today. And when those 4 ingredients are present, & practiced consistently, then our children grow up solid, secure & confident of themselves, able to go out into the world & function normally."

But if those ingredients are absent in the home, then too often the child ends up like Esau, steeped in bitterness & anger.

PROP. So let me share with you the 4 ingredients of Isaac’s blessing.

I. THE FIRST INGREDIENT - A MEANINGFUL TOUCH

A. "The first ingredient," Dr. Smalley says, "was a meaningful touch." Notice vs. 22, "Jacob went close to his father Isaac, who touched him." Vs. 26 says, "Then his father Isaac said to him, `Come here, my son, & kiss me."

Now this is not an isolated incident in scripture. Almost every time a blessing is bestowed in Hebrew culture, it involves touching - the laying on of hands, a kiss, an embrace - something that conveys acceptance & love.

ILL. The 10th chapter of the Gospel of Mark says that people brought children to Jesus so that He could touch them. Jesus took them & placed them on his knee, & laid His hands upon them, & the scripture says, "He blessed them."

Jesus knew exactly what children need to feel loved & accepted. So He touched them & blessed them.

B. It’s important to do that in our homes, too. When children are very small you can’t communicate love with words because they don’t understand words yet. But the best way to communicate love to a very small child is to demonstrate it by touching them, cuddling them, & holding them close.

Jacob was 40 years old when Isaac touched him & kissed him to convey the blessing to him. And no matter the age, I think it is important to continue to communicate love & acceptance & affection in some meaningful way.

The first ingredient of the blessing was a meaningful touch.

II. THE SECOND INGREDIENT - A SPOKEN MESSAGE OF AFFECTION & LOVE

A. The 2nd ingredient was a spoken message of affection & love. Listen as he blesses

his son in the last part of vs. 27, "Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field. . ."

Now I suppose that today’s child would not consider it a compliment to be told, "You smell like a field. I just wanted you to know that."

But to an old outdoorsman like Isaac, who thought he was speaking to Esau, the smell of a field about ready for harvest was a great smell. It was a compliment, a positive message that communicated his love & affection.

B. You see, too often parents are quick to criticize & remind children of their mistakes. "You dummy, why did you spill the milk?" "You’re lazy." "You’re too fat." Words of criticism that really don’t accomplish much. All they do is cause a child to withdraw.

I think there is room for constructive criticism. But it’s more important to communicate love through words that say, "You’re worth something. You’re such a good little boy or girl. I’m glad that God gave you to us. You’re better than any Christmas present I could ever receive. Father’s Day is special just because you’re here."

Those are words that communicate acceptance & love. And they need to be spoken over & over again, even when our children stumble & fall. Don’t wait until the last minute to do it.

III. THE THIRD INGREDIENT - THE ATTRIBUTING OF A HIGH VALUE

A. The 3rd ingredient of the blessing was the attributing of a high value. Notice what Isaac says in vs. 28, "May God give you of heaven’s dew & of earth’s richness - an abundance of grain & new wine."

He’s saying, "You’re special, so God will give you the best He has to give."

We’re constantly being told that we should teach our children to have a good, positive self-image, to build up their self-esteem. So it is important to teach the child, "You’re so valuable that God even came into our world & died on the cross for you."

ILLUSTRATION. But it’s not just by words. We teach high value in a number of ways. A lot of times when a child comes, we’re so busy. We have one eye on the TV & one eye on them, & we can’t concentrate on what they’re saying.

So when a child comes to talk to you, turn off the radio or TV set. Lay aside the newspaper, & look them in the eye. You’ll see wonder after wonder when you look into a child’s eyes, sparkling with excitement. They have so many things they’re anxious to tell you. So look at them, & listen to what they have to say!

That communicates value. "You’re worth something. You’re more important to me than the ballgame or newspaper. You’re an extremely valuable part of our family. I’m glad God gave you to us. And whenever you have something you need to talk about, I’m here to listen to you."

IV. THE FOURTH INGREDIENT - THE PICTURING OF A 'GLORIOUS FUTURE'

A. The 4th ingredient was the picturing of a glorious future. In vs. 29 Isaac says to Jacob, "May nations serve you & peoples bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, & may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed & those who bless you be blessed."

Isaac is helping him to raise his sights & see that his future is bright.  It is important to "expect" a bright future - and speak out loud with words that help you believe, at a heart level, that your bright future is coming soon.

(See Charles Capp's Website for more information on 'You get what you say - so say what you want, not what you have."

That is an important responsibility of parents, isn’t it? We all know that passage in Proverbs that says, "Train up a child in the way he should go, & when he is old he will not depart from it."

We’ve always made a spiritual application there, "Teach
them the things of God & when they’re old they will not forsake them."

But there is another application. We’re to help our children find their niche, discover who they are, & why they’ve been made. God made them special. So as they’re growing up, help them understand their gifts & talents, & what they’re best suited to do in life. Counsel & guide them to become the kind of person God wants, & made them to be.

B. The mistake most of us make as parents is we try to get our children to become what we want them to be, other than what God made them to be.

ILL. In the movie, "Dead Poets Society," is a boy who wanted very much to become an actor when he grew up. But his father wanted him to be a doctor.

The school put on a play which his father reluctantly attended. He was the star of the play & did such an outstanding job that he was given a standing ovation at the end.

After the play was over the father took his son home & said, "I’m not going to let you waste your life being an actor. I’m going to take you out of this school tomorrow & send you to a military academy." And that night, that boy committed suicide.

It’s just a story, I guess, or is it? I wonder how many people have tried to force their children into becoming something God never equipped them for, or intended them to be.

ILLUSTRATION. Maybe you heard the story about a little girl named Sandra who was raised in an adobe house in a rural area of New Mexico, without electricity & running water.

In fact, her mother & father had to drive to El Paso, 200 miles away, so that her mother could be in the hospital when Sandra was born.

Because they were so far away from any school, Sandra’s parents home-schooled her. They ordered a variety of magazines to expose her to the outside world. She grew up in a very wholesome environment.

Her fondest memories of her family are of the times when mom & dad took the whole family on vacation to visit state capitols. They went into every capitol building & climbed their domes, west of the Mississippi.

When Sandra graduated from high school, she went to Stanford University & graduated with honors. Today, Sandra Day O’Connor is the first woman to be seated in the Supreme Court of the United States of America. All because mom & dad cared enough to help her see herself in the image in which God created her. And then to encourage her to be all that she could be.

Now maybe our children aren’t that intelligent or gifted. But our responsibility as parents is to help them see themselves for who they really are, & to help them prepare for a glorious future.

SUMMARY. I think this is the mortar that holds a family together - A meaningful touch, a spoken message, attributing a high value, & picturing a glorious future.

CONCLUSION. This morning, God is the perfect parent who has conveyed to us all the ingredients of His blessing in just one verse of scripture. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. Whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life."

This morning we offer God’s invitation. A loving Father reaches down to touch us, speak to us, tell us how valuable we are, & help us see the glorious future that we have in Him.

If you have a decision to make this morning we invite you to come. We pray that you will respond as we stand & sing.

Father's Day - THE BLESSING

MELVIN NEWLAND wrote this Sermon entitled 'The Blessing' - and I trust that it was a blessing to you and your family.

Take time to give a "BLESSING" to each and every one of your children, and pray for them daily.

Invite your children to read one Proverb a day
- reading the one that matches that day's date. (Read the 20th Proverb on the 20th of every month.)  This will help impart God's "Wisdom" into their lives and their choices.  Invite them to keep their Bible (I prefer the NLT - New Living Translation) on the back of their toilet.  As they sit there, they can read their "Proverb" of the day.  It will help.  God's Word always does because it has power!

God bless you,
Pastor Ed Brady

PS: "If you haven't seen your children in a long time, or they do not send cards or call you for Father's Day, remember Paul's "thorn" in his side.  Jesus told him, "My Grace is Sufficient for Thee."  In other words, if you focus on the problem with your children, Satan will use that against you.  However, if you remember that God's grace is sufficient to get you through this (and any other problem), so keep your eyes on Jesus.  When Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he could "walk on water" (do the impossible), but when He focused on the storm, he began to sink in to the water!  But, even then, Jesus there was there to grab him and pull him up.  Jesus promises that He "will never leave you nor forsake you" - and in the midst of this problem (and all the others), Jesus is right there with you.  Recognize that and receive the "Peace that Passes Understanding" from Him now.  EB

How to Hear God's Voice - Ask Him to Speak, then Listen

How to Hear God's Voice - An interactive book and class from Mark & Patti Virkler

Let me know, after you ask God to hear his voice in your heart, what He said to you, if you want to do so.
Love ya, Pastor Ed Brady

What Mark and Patti Virkler are trying, I believe, to teach us that "we can read God's word in the Bible, but to rise to a new level of relationship with the Lord we want to develop the ability to "hear God speak to us" -- not in our ears, but speak into our hearts what He wants to say to us, so it's easier for us to follow His plans for our lives.

Here are two entries from The Virkler's Journal.  They wrote this after God spoke to them - not in a "Logos" way (the written word of God), but in a "Rhema" way (the voice of God heard in our hearts).

The Lord said:

"I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.  I am the first and the last, the light and the power.  I am able to do exceedingly abumdantly above all that you are able to think and ask.  Just Come to Me, and I will be your strength, I will be your lover.  You must simply come to Me.  It cannot be accomplished without time together, so, Come to Me often, continuously.  I am always here.  I am always ready to listen and respond.  I am a great and loving God, slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness. I do forgive your sins.  I do clothe you with righteousness.  You must only seek Me with all your heart and turn from your ways, and Come to Me.  Will you do that?"

And He said:

"I enjoy just being with you, not doing anything special together, just being toegether.  I enjoy the fragrance of your worship.  Times of solitude and peaceful to Me.  It is like a quiet brook, flowing on the mountainside.  I desire your presence.  It is refreshing to Me.  It is the fulfillment of my Purposes when you choose to be with Mr.  It brings Me great pleasure.  Do it often.  Do not think every time we come together that it must be to accomplish something.  Simjply being together is greatest accomplishment, just being with one another.  Com let us enjoy one another."

  • I can have a relationship with God through spiritual experiences rather than the dry monologue of simple mental prayer.
  • The essence of prayer is my love relationshipwith the King of Kings, not simply going to Him to get things.
  • The main purpose for learning to hear God's voice is so that I might really know Him -- His heart, His joyse, His desires, His hurts, His character and His will.
  • The principles from the Bible that relate to prayer and the spiritual realm provide direction and understanding as I travel the road of spiritual experiences.
  • The Holy Spirit will mold my prayer life, instead of me taking the principles of prayer God has shown me and reducing them to legalistic bondage.
  • Spirit-Born specific action and power flow as a natural result of my love relationship, causing the activities of my life to be of the Spirit and not the flesh.  This keeps my relationship with the King of King from being self-indulgent on my part and helps me to realize that many others need to be touched by His love also.
  • Christianity is not a 'religion' - it is a 'relationship' with Jesus, based on love, that we enjoy and share with others.
Remember - The "Voice" you hear in your heart is the Holy Spirit because Jesus said, "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another, a Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Holy Spirit of Truth, who the world cannot understand nor receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides in you.  I will not leave you as an orphan; I will come to you."  John 14:16-18

Happy Mother's Day - How to be a Godly Mother in an Ungodly World

How to be a Godly Mother in an Ungodly World - Happy Mother's Day
Titus 2:3-5

Today is Mother’s Day in America.
We hear every day about wicked mothers who do evil things, but I believe most people have good mothers who do their best. No mother is perfect / motherhood is no easy job. Our culture has embraced as its greatest value personal happiness. The dangers of divorce, acceptance of sexual immorality, and a preoccupation with self-fulfillment have taken their toll on the family. While our culture spins out of control and the family unit breaks down, the Bible lifts up the family and exalts the place of the woman in the family. Motherhood is a ministry. It is a ministry of teaching, preparing children to follow God’s pathways, and being an example of the love of Jesus.

I heard about a missionary who was trying to stir up interest to get people to go to a foreign country to preach the gospel. At the end of the service a woman dragging a little boy behind her, told the missionary, "I just feel like God is calling me to be a missionary." "He is, indeed" and pointing to the little boy, "And there’s the little heathen he wants you to preach to."

Titus ministered in a pagan environment among Christians who had a background in such violence, dishonesty, and immorality that the Cretans were legendary for it. (1:12) The Christian Women were trying to be godly, but they were living in a supremely ungodly society. The older women are exhorted to teach / train the young women in the noble, excellent, and beautiful things of life. The older women are to teach the young and mothers How to be a Godly Mother in an Ungodly World. This is ancient advice with contemporary power.

I. Love Your Husband (4)

A. The marriage relationship takes priority. Ephesians 5:22-33 lays down the principles that should govern the home where the husband and wife desire to love each other in the will of God.

B. When the marriage relationship is priority:

*The wife and husband will be the most fulfilled.

*The children will learn how to have successful marriage.

*The wife and husband will both be aware of the dangers of placing other pursuits as priorities above the marriage relationship.

C. This is in contrast to the ungodliness of our world where personal happiness is placed above every other priority. Godly Mothers in an Ungodly World love their husbands.

II. Love Your Children
A. Loving our children does not mean: Giving them everything they want; Making sure that they keep up with the world; Make their own religious decisions.

B. Loving children requires:

*Discipline. Proverbs 23:13-14 "Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die. Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death." Discipline is a sign of love.

*Instilling the Christian world view

*Teaching them to love Jesus Christ.

*Caring for their spiritual, emotional, and physical needs. Psalm 127:3-5. 2 Timothy 1:5 "I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well."

C. Godly Mothers Love your husband and children.

III. Develop Christian Character (Four Areas)

A. Be Self-Controlled (discreet KJV; sensible NASB; live wisely (NLT). This means to be sober minded.
The young woman is to think about what she is doing with her life. The Cretans were known for a lack of self-control. This is a fruit of the Spirit - it influences all we do. 1 Timothy 2:9 "… women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control…"

B. Be Pure
*This relates to a commitment to your marriage vows.

*This relates to spiritual influence in the home. (1 Peter 3:1-2 "Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives- when they see your respectful and pure conduct.")

*This relates to the image of purity. Christian women are to be chaste, modest, pure in heart and mind. Think in terms of speech, dress, all relationships. Christian mothers need to pass these on to children.

C. Work at Home (5). In the time of Titus, there were false teachers who were dividing families with their teachings. Many worldly elements work against families today. Paul is not prohibiting women working outside the home, but he clearly urges that the home take a position of priority in our lives. Christian homes are created, they do not just happen. Barclay: "It is the simple fact that there is no greater task, responsibility and privilege in this world than to make a home."

D. Be Kind. Kindness deals with doing good, being benevolent toward others, hospitality. Having a giving nature.

E. Submit to Your Husband. God has created an order which includes a masculine ’headship’; not of authority….but of responsibility and loving care. (John Stott). "Where love and mutual respect rule the home there will be little problem with submission on the part of the wife…The husband is not a dictator, but he exercises his headship primarily by service. This is the same way that Jesus expressed his headship over the church." (Bruce Stewart)

F. These character qualities are quite different than what was common among the Cretans. ..and they are not as common in our culture either.

Conclusion:

I heard about a little boy sitting on his front steps with his face cradled in his hands, looking so forlorn. His dad came home just then & asked him what was wrong. The little boy looked up & said, "Well, just between us, Dad, I’m having trouble getting along with your wife, too!"

The Mom Ministry is one of the toughest assignments God ever gave anybody! She’s got to be as insightful as a psychologist, tough as a marine corps drill instructor, gentle as a nurse. She’s got to be a labor and management negotiator. A teacher, an electrician, a plumber and a carpenter….It requires an endless supply of energy, a massive amount of patience, and iron will, and recognition of the fact that if she ever gets sick, she’s got to get well before the end of the school day.

600 college students were asked to write down the most beautiful word in the English language. 422 of them wrote the word "mother".

Being a Godly Mother in an Ungodly World isn’t an easy task. We need to pray for our mothers often...and I thank Rev. John Dobbs for his wisdom and insight we've shared here today.
God bless you,

What is my 'favorite' Bible?
Posted 4/18/2010

Pastor Ed here... And one question that I get asked a lot (because I'm an Ordained Minister) is "What is your 'favorite' BIble, Pastor Ed?"

The answer is the "Life Application Bible" (large print) in the NLT (New Living Translation).

Why?  Because, the NLT (New Living Translation) is written in today's English and is easy to read and easy for me to understand.  Personally, I don't care for the old-fashioned King James version (although a lot of people 'love' it) but nobody "talk-eth like that-eth anymore-eth." (smile)

The other reason is that the bottom half of each page has an 'explanation' of how to 'apply' the Bible to our lives.  As it says in the Book of James, "Faith without works is dead."  It's not enough to know the words in "The Word" of God, we all have to 'apply' it to our lives and live it daily.  That's one of the key features of the Life Application Bible because it challenges us not just to 'talk the talk' but to 'walk the walk' of being Christians in this dark and troubled world.

One of my favorite questions is this: "If you arrested for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?"  We have have to let our faith in Jesus show in a loving way to everyone we meet.   Christ is counting on us being His "Ambassadors" to others.  In fact, we may be the only Jesus that people ever meet.  Do we represent Him well?  I hope so.

The NLT  "Life Application Bible" comes in various versions that address specific needs.  For example, you can buy a version just for people who are overcoming an addition to drugs or alcohol, called the "Recovery" Bible.  Check out the Website of your favorite Christian Book Seller (I usually buy from http://www.christianbook.com), for all the versions and invest in the one that you feel led, by the Holy Spirit, to buy for yourself.  Make sure you order "age-appropriate" Bibles for all your children and grand-children, also.  When their lives hit a 'bump' in the road of life, they'll need their Bibles and a close relationship with Jesus to get them through the tough times.

Here's the information from www.christianbook.com on this wonderful Bible that I enjoy so much in my daily reading and prayer times.  It comes in hard-cover, soft-cover, leather-cover, large print, etc.

NLT Life Application Study Bible, Large Print Hardcover
$37.99
Retail: $49.99

In closing, I sincerely suggest that you invest time in the Bible every day.  Most people get up a little early every day and start their day in the Word of God to find the direction for their day.  In Conclusion, which Bible is the best translation? King James, NIV, NLT?  My answer is simple: "The Best Bible Translation for you is the one that you will read every day."

At Church, we sometimes call them a "CEO"
Posted 3/28/2010

Hello friends,  Pastor Ed here.

Before coming to the Twin Cities, I was the Pastor of a few churches: One in Illinois, one in Iowa, and one in Wisconsin.  Before that I enjoyed four years in seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, where I got my Master's Degree in Divinity.

In seminary (and in the churches where I served as Pastor), we sometimes called them a "CEO" - and that's not referring to "Chief Executive Officer" of any Corporation.

I'm talking about people who rarely come to Church.  These folks only visit a Church on:
  1. Christmas
  2. Easter, and
  3. Other special occassions (like Weddings and Funerals)
I'm letting you know this because "Easter" is next Sunday, and I'd recommend that you invite someone to attend Church with you next Sunday, okay?

The best time to sell umbrellas is in the rain because they're getting wet and likely to buy what you're selling... the best time to sell food is when people are hungry because they're likely to say "Yes" - So... since people are "likely" to want to attend Church on Easter, they are likely to say "Yes" when you invite them to go to Church with you next Sunday.  Since they're likely to say "Yes" - you are less likely to suffer rejection - So, go ahead and ask a friend, or ask a neighbor because we are to be "Ambassadors" for our Lord and Savior and Redeemer and Healer, Jesus Christ.

If you're reading this, and you don't have a place to attend Church for Easter, allow me to invite you to the Church where Mrs. Brady and I attend: Living Word Christian Center in Brooklyn Park, MN.

Services are 5pm Saturday; 9am Sunday and 11am Sunday.  For directions, or more information, you can email me at ed@dothebob.com or visit our Church's Website for a map at http://www.lwcc.org.  You'll be glad you attended.  Over the past 5 years, Living Word has changed my life for the better.

If you can't attend in-person, you can watch the Worship Services on your Computer Screen at 5pm Sat. and 9am and 11am on Sundays, so you'll be able to be "inspired" in the convenience of your own home on the Internet: http://ww.lwcc.org. However, being there in person really is better!

God bless you,
Pastor Ed Brady

The "Peace" that Passes Understanding - Receive it now
Posted 3/21/2010

One of the things that gives me "peace" in my life... even on difficult days... is the Word of God.

There really is a "Peace that Passes Understanding."  We, as Christians, as followers of Christ Jesus, can find "peace" in the midst of the worst storms of life.

During these times  I turn to the BIble, or I turn on the TV or Radio to a Bible-based Sermon and "listen" to the Word of God, instead of listening to the ways of the World.  I remember a sermon that gave me "peace" by Andy Stanley, which allowed me to remain at "peace" during turbulent times.  I hope it helps you too!

1. In an airplane or jet, when the fasten seatbelt sign comes on, it means one of three things: You are taking off, landing, or experiencing turbulence. All three are critical times during a flight. Why? Because all three are transitions. In the case of taking off, we know what to expect. Landing, we know what to expect.

2. But in mid-flight, when the fasten seatbelt sign comes on, you just don’t know. The people I know who don’t like to fly have a turbulence story to tell.

3. And when the captain turns it off . . . whew.

4. Since 9/11, for us as a nation, the captain has turned on the fasten seatbelt sign. Trouble ahead. It could be a short, small bump. Or it may be time to pull out the little bag in the seatback in front of you.

5. First quarter of next year, the economy may surge ahead, the war may end, and terrorism may be a thing of the past. Or we may be in for several quarters/years of uncertainty.

6. It could be that the fasten seatbelt sign has come on for you personally: your daughter is pregnant; the doctor called; your job is at risk; your marriage is at risk.

7. Whatever the case . . . as is the situation in a jet . . . we are out of control. Actually, we have never really been in control. But it sure is fun to think we are. And when the reality of the situation is staring us in the face personally and nationally, it is frightening.

The good news is . . .

I. Most of what we are given in the Scriptures was written in an environment of uncertainty.

A. This book is not filled with feel-good messages for a world we don’t live in. Here we find God speaking directly into uncertain times. Maybe more comforting, we see God’s hand in the midst of uncertainty.

1. Joseph found himself in a pit while his brothers debated whether to sell him or kill him . . . and we discover that God was with him.

2. King David was awakened one morning to the rumor that his own son was conspiring against him, but he had no proof —many of the Psalms reflect the uncertainty of those days.

3. The apostle Paul thought God had called him, but found himself bound and dragged to prison—and with the future a blur. He writes to us about what to do when God’s promises don’t seem to be coming true.

4. One afternoon an angel appeared to a teenager and announced that she . . . the Bible says Mary was perplexed. What did this mean? The future was completely different.

B. This book is filled with stories of people facing uncertainty and discovering that not only is God not absent, but he is often diligently at work accomplishing his will in this world and in the lives of those he loves.

C. This is a book about how very much God is in control and how very much we are not.

1. And that is exactly why we will not like some of the answers we find here when it comes to responding to uncertainty.

2. I want the answer to be that if I will do three things, life will be back to normal, and I will be back in control.
3. What we find in Scripture seems much too passive. It leaves us too vulnerable and dependent.

4. I don’t want to fasten my seatbelt. I want the turbulence to go away.

5. I don’t want to be guided through it. I want to be led around it... Or, I just want it to go away!

6. I want to find something in here that will guarantee my safety, the end of terrorism, a cure for smallpox,...
a booming economy, and a sustained rally on Wall Street. Where are those verses?

D. As frustrating as some of the answers might be, the options are worse.

1. Worry? Panic? Overreact? Fear?

2. I’ve never known any of those things to be productive.

3. They generally make things worse:

• Relationally–nobody gets our undivided attention. We get very self-centered.

• Financially–we make decisions based on our ability to predict the future. We shop to kill the pain.

Don't underestimate what God says about times of uncertainty. This is not new to him. He is never "surprised" at what has happened.

However, remember only "good" and Godly things come from God.  Tragedy, death, harm all come from the evil one, the Devil.  As humans, when tragedy happens we often mistakenly blame God.  Jesus came to give us "life" and "life more abundant" -- but Satan comes to steal, kill and destroy.  He is the enemy.  God is always your friend, your Father, but never your enemy.

This message for you is not an instruction manual about how to get back into control or how to get life back to normal.

It is about learning to follow through the valleys with confidence that God is in control and that his purposes personally and nationally will not be thwarted.

So what do we do? We are going to talk about four terms—four things to do. And the first one is probably the most predictable: PRAY.

[Turn to Philippians 4:4.]

II. Paul, from prison, instructs us to pray in times of uncertainty.

A. After being shipwrecked in Malta, Paul arrives in Rome during the reign of Nero. Not a good time for a Christian to be in Rome. He is writing to a church 700 miles away —four months travel.

B. "Rejoice . . . the Lord is near."

1. In the midst of uncertainty, don’t be sucked into the same sense of gloom and doom as everyone else. You know who is in control.

2. God hasn’t gone anywhere.

3. Don’t let uncertainty impact your character. Be gracious and gentle.

4. Don’t lose your influence.

C. "Be anxious for nothing."

1. This is where I need to step aside and let the Scriptures speak.  Then, you need to "Speak" the Scriptures out loud yourself.  Say things that you can hear, like: "Jesus will never leave me, nor forsake me."  and "God will supply ALL my needs from His riches in glory in Christ Jesus."  Speak Scriptures (not worry words) aloud so you can hear yourself saying them.

Yes, you can question me and say, "How is that possible?" I’m just quoting a prisoner (Paul) who knows what happens to Christians under Nero. He is staring down the barrels of extermination along with his cause. Because if Nero has his way, there will be no church.

2. ANXIOUS: Be troubled by or distracted by cares or fear. The context is always concern about the future.
a. What are we supposed to do? But, strong contrast . . .

D. "But in everything . . . let your requests be made known to God."

1. Objection: "I already did that." But I’m still anxious and stressed out. Besides, nothing happens; nothing changes."

2. Paul is not talking about a little, "Lord you know my needs . . ."
He’s not talking about emergency prayers in the car.
He is not talking about the 30-second kind of prayer.

Look how he describes the process:

3. The Prayer

• By prayer, by supplication (repeated for emphasis and intensity)

• With thanksgiving—trust.

4. "Present your requests to God." ("Let your requests be made known to God.") Ask Him for help... and when He sends Help, receive it.  Sometimes He gives us presents that don't look like what we're looking for.  Trust that the Lord will give you exactly what you need.

Literally: reveal the mystery of your requests, something that unfolds that was not previously known. The idea is not to inform God . . . but to discover what it is you are really after and verbalize that to God. Learn and unearth what it is you fear and what it is you desire . . . and tell it. The focus here is on revealing what’s on the inside of us. Pour out what is in you to God.  No matter who you are, or what you've done, He wants to listen to you.

5. Uncertainty elicits fear.

• Fear, if explored, can reveal our deepest desires . . . what we really want.

• When we are able to discover and give to God those deep, otherwise unknown desires, something happens.

6. Illustration: Lord, I need a job . . . "What are you afraid of?" Nothing. "What if you don’t get a job?"

I’m afraid ...
• I’m afraid for my family.
• I’m afraid for my reputation...or money... or job...or whatever
• He hears God whisper, "I can handle that."

7. In your prayers of uncertainty, pray this, "Lord, I need you to . . .
"If you don’t, I’m afraid . . . However, I know that you can and will fix this situation soon, Lord."

This is about placing into God’s hands what only God’s hands are capable of handling.

E. The result — "Peace . . ." Literally: "which surpasses every thought of man."

1. It transcends human understanding in that it makes no sense to have peace when nothing has changed.

• Peace that precedes change

• Peace grounded in the fact that God is in control

2. Peace stands guard/protects your heart and mind, your emotions and thoughts.

• When the circumstances/pressures grab your attention, there is peace. You aren’t all knotted up on the inside.

• When things take you by surprise, there is peace.

"It is an inside thing that sets us apart on the outside" - We live "inside" our minds.  We must change our thoughts to trust, confidence in God, no matter what the circumstances.  God can get you through it all.

III. Prayer isn’t about changing things. Prayer is about being changed.

A. Changed to trust the Father with the things only he can control.

B. Changed so that we are free from decisions that will only complicate our lives.

C. Changed because we have placed into God’s hands what only God’s hands are capable of handling.

1. I didn’t learn this from the Bible. I learned this from walking through some terrible storms in my life.

I can remember living in a funeral home, eating on food stamps, and driving a $100 car.  No matter how far "down" I got, I counted on God helping me to get "Through it All" - (That's one of my favorite Hymns - "Through It All" by Andre Crouch.  Look it up and sing it.

2. In my life, I found a place to pray, and I stayed in prayer until the peace came.
Stayed until I had sufficiently handed off what God intended to carry anyway.  Sometimes I couldn't think of anything to pray, except "Jesus help me... Jesus help me... Jesus help me..." and He always did.

3. When the fasten seatbelt sign comes on in your life - DON'T WORRY, PRAY. And though you go to that quiet place in hopes that the world will change, what you will find is that you will change.

4. It is there in the lonely place that you will gain the perspective and peace you need to handle the uncertainty of life. I would like to jump- start the process for some of you.

[Take time to pray now]

I love you, and care for you... and as a Pastor I want you to learn (through me or through the Word of God) that there is "Peace that passes understanding... even in the worst storms of life."  If you lean on Jesus, and don't quit, you'll win.

May the "Peace that Passes Understanding" enter your Spirit, Soul and Body now.
In Jesus' name, Amen.

You get what you expect... and what you say. Pastor Ed
Posted 3/14/2010

You get what you expect... and what you say... So expect the "Best" and say only what you really want.

Let me explain, please.

In my life, I've been given two free cars.  First I prayed, "Lord, may I please have a newer and better car at little or no cost."  I prayed that daily for over 6 months, by faith, expecting that the car would come.  And now, twice in my life, I've been given free cars.  The first free car was given to me when I was back in Seminary (an almost new Ford Crown Victoria) and my 2nd of many free cars in my life is pictured below (an almost new Chevrolet HHR).

Now, if you say to yourself, I'm going to start praying every day asking God for a free car.  That's great.  Jesus said, "Whatever you ask God for, in my name, expecting by faith to receive it, you shall receive it."  (Don't ask for anything against God's will, like stolen money or a mistress with whom you could commit adultery.)

However, if you say to yourself, "That would never happen to me."  Then, I'm sorry.  That (free cars) would never happen to you, because you get what you expect, and what you say.

When the ads on TV and Radio say, "Flu season is here, you'd better buy the drugs we're selling."  I change the channel and say out loud, "Not in my house.  I remain healthy, and so will all the people in our family, by the power of the Holy Spirit inside me."  You get what you expect...you get what you say.  God wants all of us to be healthy, so we are asking for things only in the BIble and only in God's will.

This doesn't work with silly stuff, like "I want to win the Lotto game," because God knows that would ruin your life and it's not in His will for us to get rich quick by using worldly tools like the Lottery.  I haven't bought a Lottery ticket in decades, because I know that it's a waste of time and money.  Instead, I ask God to lead me and guide me in His will and give me the desires of my heart.

Speaking of God giving you the desires of your heart, that doesn't mean that you can desire a new yellow Corvette and expect God to deliver it.  Here's what I believe it means.  Scripture says, "If you delight yourself in the Lord, He will give you the desires of your heart."  He will give you the desire to help orphans and widows. Or, he will give you the desire to save the dolphins.  Or, He will give you a strong desire for improved intimacy with your spouse instead of that good-looking 'cutie' at work.  God gives us the desires of our heart... He places in us what we should desire, so we can be used by Him to serve Him for His glory.

Want a spouse?  My prayer was, "Lord, I don't know how to pick a wife; You pick one for me."  And He picked Mrs. Brady for me and the day I met her, I heard God say to me: "This one."

Get negative thoughts & doubts? - then doubt your doubts.  Expect only the best, and say what you want.

Could you help me, please, with your suggestions and your prayers?

My two Sunday morning radio ministries, "Sonrise with Pastor Ed" and "Country Gospel with Ed Brady" could use some 'sponsors' for both programs.

Do you own a company?  Do you know the owner of a company who could benefit from advertising with us on Sunday mornings?  The audience is very large and very loyal and I'm sure that God would bless you with customers and business from your investment with us.

I'm sure that if you pray, the Lord will inspire you with the name of a person or company who could enjoy more customers for their business, right?  With 40 years in radio, I can create a great radio ad and radio advertising campaign for them.

Some of my favorite Scriptures appy here: "God supplies all my needs from His riches in glory in Christ Jesus." God knows which companies should be buying ads with us, and He will supply the information (perhaps through you) so I can help those advertisers succeed.  Another Scripture that applies is: "You have not because you ask not."  So, I'm asking for your help, your suggestions and your prayers to find sponsors.

"Sonrise with Pastor Ed" is broadcast on WLKX "Spirit-95.9-FM" 6-8am every Sunday.
"Country Gospel with Ed Brady" is on the air on KLCI "Bob-106.1-FM" 8-10am Sundays, too.

Part of "Getting Well" is putting the "Past" in the past -
Posted 2/28/2010

Unfortunately, all of us have been "sick" from time to time in our lives.  Sometimes we're sick so often, or so long, that we get "sick and tired" of being sick and tired.  Being healthy is "normal" and God wants your body and your soul healthy.  It says so in the Bible.

Believe the "Good News" is that God wants to heal us.  Would you believe that some people actually believe that God doesn't want us healed, even though God's Word says that he wants us all healed?  It is Satan who doesn't want us healed.  Even in Job, it is Satan who goes to God and asks God for permission to strike Job's life with problems and sickness.

Some people say, "God must not want to heal me, because he wants to teach me something."  Not true.  Everytime Jesus touched someone's life, it was to "heal" them, not to give them a sickness.  Again, sickness is from the Devil, and we have authority over him.  "Greater is He who is in me, than he who is in the world."

"If you want the mountain to move, speak to the mountain and it will move," Jesus said.  So, if you want your body, or mind, or emotions to be well, speak to them with the authority of the Holy Spirit in you.  You and I have the same power of the Holy Spirit in us that raised Jesus from the dead, so have faith in God and speak to your sickness telling it to go.  Speak to your body, and tell it to heal.

Another idea to help you get well, is to get rid of all the "old" medicines and bandages that you have in your cupboard or closet.  Many of us keep the medicines or the bandages from an old injury that has healed, as if we're saying, "I might need that again, just in case I get sick again."  That's giving permission for the illness to return.  Get rid of all the stuff you used to help God heal your problems of the past.  Have faith in Jesus that you are healed, and that you will not need that stuff anymore.

I've listed some "healing" scriptures from the New Testament below.  Please take time to ponder them, believe in them and receive the healing that God has for you today.

God bless you,
Pastor Ed Brady

  19. 1 Corinthians 12:30 (Whole Chapter)

What's really important in our lives?
Posted 1/24/2010

What's really important in our lives?

If you want to see what's most important in your life, look at your check-book.  We invest the most in the things that are most important to us.  For example, some folks would spend the most on mortgage, the cars, food, entertainment, etc.

God tells us that we must "Seek first the Kingdom of God" and that the "First ten percent, the tithe, belongs to Him" -- and if we refuse to give it to Him, we're robbing Him.  So a person who tithes might list their check book receipts with 1) Tithes and offerings, 2) mortage, 3) cars, and so on. Most folks spend money on themselves first, and give God a few bucks in the Offering Plate from what is left.  I doubt that Jesus smiles when He sees us do that.

Another test of what's most important to us is time.  What do we spend the most time on?  Our work, sports, our cars, etc.  If we have a few minutes left each week, we might sit down and read our Bible and pray for a few minutes each week.  I doubt that pleases the Lord either.  He wants to come first in our lives.

When I the Pastor of churches in Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin, about this time each year, I'd give people the "Super Bowl" test.  I'd ask them to name 12 NFL football players playing in the Super Bowl... and the congregation always came up with more than 12 names, because we pay attention to the "Super Bowl" and memorize things about it.

Then, I'd ask them to name the 12 apostles that walked this earth with Jesus.  (Silence...)  Usually the folks in the congregation could get a few like Peter, James and John, but that's about all.  It shows that football is important to us, and the Bible is so far down on our list most of us cannot even name the 10 Commandments or the 12 apostles

You pray about this, and make changes in your life, if you feel led by the Holy Spirit to do so.  Thanks for listening!

The apostles names are listed below in Matthew 10.
God bless you,
Pastor Ed Brady

Matthew 10

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority to cast out evil[a] spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness. 2 Here are the names of the twelve apostles:

   first, Simon (also called Peter),
   then Andrew (Peter’s brother),
   James (son of Zebedee),
   John (James’s brother),
    3 Philip,
   Bartholomew,
   Thomas,
   Matthew (the tax collector),
   James (son of Alphaeus),
   Thaddaeus,[
b]
    4 Simon (the zealot[
c]),
Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed him).

5 Jesus sent out the twelve apostles with these instructions: “Don’t go to the Gentiles or the Samaritans, 6 but only to the people of Israel—God’s lost sheep. 7 Go and announce to them that the Kingdom of Heaven is near.[d] 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!

9 “Don’t take any money in your money belts—no gold, silver, or even copper coins. 10 Don’t carry a traveler’s bag with a change of clothes and sandals or even a walking stick. Don’t hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve to be fed.

11 “Whenever you enter a city or village, search for a worthy person and stay in his home until you leave town. 12 When you enter the home, give it your blessing. 13 If it turns out to be a worthy home, let your blessing stand; if it is not, take back the blessing. 14 If any household or town refuses to welcome you or listen to your message, shake its dust from your feet as you leave. 15 I tell you the truth, the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah will be better off than such a town on the judgment day.

16 “Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves. 17 But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues. 18 You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me.[e] 19 When you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the right time. 20 For it is not you who will be speaking—it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

21 “A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed. 22 And all nations will hate you because you are my followers.[f] But everyone who endures to the end will be saved. 23 When you are persecuted in one town, flee to the next. I tell you the truth, the Son of Man[g] will return before you have reached all the towns of Israel.

24 “Students[h] are not greater than their teacher, and slaves are not greater than their master. 25 Students are to be like their teacher, and slaves are to be like their master. And since I, the master of the household, have been called the prince of demons,[i] the members of my household will be called by even worse names!

26 “But don’t be afraid of those who threaten you. For the time is coming when everything that is covered will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all. 27 What I tell you now in the darkness, shout abroad when daybreak comes. What I whisper in your ear, shout from the housetops for all to hear!

28 “Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.[j] 29 What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin[k]? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. 30 And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.

32 “Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.

34 “Don’t imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace, but a sword.

35 ‘I have come to set a man against his father,
      a daughter against her mother,
   and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
36 Your enemies will be right in your own household!’[l]

37 “If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine. 38 If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine. 39 If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.

40 “Anyone who receives you receives me, and anyone who receives me receives the Father who sent me. 41 If you receive a prophet as one who speaks for God,[m] you will be given the same reward as a prophet. And if you receive righteous people because of their righteousness, you will be given a reward like theirs. 42 And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.”

God has said: "My Ways are not your ways" - But God...
Posted 1/17/2010

God has told us, "My Ways are not your ways" so we need to relax and "lean on" the Word of God has we go through this life.

Our Father in heaven is so big, so wonderful, so great and so awesome that He is beyond our understanding.  That is one reason I'm glad that He sent His son, Jesus Christ, to this earth because Jesus is a lot easier for me to understand than God the Father and God the Holy Spirit.  Because Jesus is fully God and fully man, we can relate to Jesus as a person and act as He acted when He was here on this earth about 2,000 years ago.  Remember the bracelets that said "W.W.J.D." that most of us wore?  As humans, with a human brain, we can consider what we're about to do, stop, think, "What Would Jesus Do?" and make a better choice of action, right?

Our society is generally a "negative" speaking society, with people complaining about life, their jobs and more, correct?  Let's re-frame what we say and speak Scripture every day.  Just 'saying' the Words of the Bible will help make our lives better.  I've tried it and that works.  (For more information on "You get what you say" see the Website of a minister named Charles Capps.)

For example:
  • We say: "It's impossible." But God says: "With God, all things are possible." (Luke 18:27)
  • We say: "Nobody loves me." But God says: "I love you completely and unconditionally." (John 3:16 & 3:34)
  • We say: "I can't go on."  But God says, "My grace is sufficient for you." (2 Corinthians 12:9 & Psalm 91:15)
  • We say: "I can't figure it out." But God says: "I will direct you in everything you do." (Proverbs 3:5-6)
  • We say: "I can't do it." But God says: "You can do all things through Christ." (Philippians 4:13)
  • We say: "I'm afraid." But God says: "I have not given you a spirit of fear." (2 Timothy 1:7)
  • We say: "I feel so alone." But God says: "I will never leave you nor forsake you." (Hebrews 13:5
If we say what the world says, we'll get stuck complaining and not enjoying this life.  If we say what the Word says, we'll rise above the world by the power of the Holy Spirit.  Jesus didn't say, "You get what you want" - He did say: "You get what you say."  Say only the promises of God found in The Bible.  Write out your goals for the coming year, pray for them and ask God to bless them.

Thanks very much for listening to "Country Gospel" every Sunday, 8-10am on BOB-106-FM; and to "Sonrise" every Sun. 6-8am on Spirit-95.9-FM.
In His Love,
Pastor Ed Brady
A blessing for you from me: "I pray that God will bless you with 2010 be a debt-free and prosperous year for you, your family and your business; and I pray that when God leads you, guides you and directs you to a debt-free and prosperous life that you will, by the power of the Holy Spirit in you, be willing to receive those blessings." Thanks for supporting our stations in Africa.

Thanks for supporting our stations in Africa.  For more information, go to http://www.africapublicradio.com.

Many of you know (but some don't) that we take some of the profits from BOB-106-FM and build Christian radio stations in Africa.  So far, I believe, that we've built 8 and we'll keep building them as long as God leads us to build them.  I think we're planning on 20 or 30 stations in Africa.  Some of them are in cities like Kampala, Uganda, and some are in Ghana.  There's more info, directly on the Website: http://www.africapublicradio.com.

The primary owners of our radio stations, Dennis Carpenter, who lives here in the Twin Cities, and his partner, Dan Peters, who spends most of his time building radio stations in Africa, are sure that God has led them to serve Him in this way, building Christian radio stations in Africa.  It warms my heart to be employed here at a company that serves the Lord in that way.  When I sell advertising on BOB-106-FM, it is pleasing to me to know that a portion of that advertiser's dollars will be going to win souls to Christ in Africa.  Most of the people there, I think, are Muslim, but in the areas where we have radio stations, Christianity is growing and the AIDS epidemic is decreasing.

I'm honored that the "Country Gospel" programs that you hear on BOB-106-FM from 8-10am every Sunday morning, and the "Sonrise with Pastor Ed" programs that you hear on Spirit-95.9-FM radio every Sunday from 6am-8am, are also being played in Africa.  I get many, many Emails from listeners in Africa who are inspired by the Christian lyrics in the songs.

If you want to financially support our stations in Africa, it is a 5013C, so your donations are tax deductable.  More info on their Website: http://www.africapublicradio.com.  Pray and do as the Holy Spirit leads you.  In His Love, Pastor Ed Brady http://www.edbradyradio.com.

Seek FIRST the Kingdom of God - "Country Gospel" on BOB-FM
Posted 12/20/2009

Setting our priorities straight is so important.  The Bible teaches us that God sets before us "Life and Death... Blessing and Cursing"... and then He tells us which one to choose: "Choose Life" He says.  We choose life everytime we do for others what Jesus would do.  We are His 'ambassadors' in this world.  You may be the only Bible that some people read (by watching how you live); You  may be the only Jesus that people meet in this life (They tend to judge Christ  and Christianity by how Christians act and live.)

The most important things I do right now in this life are serve God by Serving BOB-FM and "Country Gospel" is at the top of my  list.  It is an 'honor' to be permitted to host this special radio ministry that plays here on BOB-106-FM every Sunday from 8am-10am, and it runs on all 7 of the Christian radio stations that our company has built in Africa too!  (Yes, I get Emails from listeners in Africa, and it is great to see how much they love the Lord.) I thank God for sending me here to these stations.  Keep me in your prayers that I serve Him well each year here.

Did you know that I do another Sunday Morning Radio Ministry for our company?  "Country Gospel" is on BOB-106.1 FM from 8am-10am; but before that show starts, I'm on the air 'across the hall' with "Sonrise with Pastor Ed" on WLKX Spirit-95.9-FM Radio.  If you get up very early on Sundays, try "Sonrise" from 6am-8am on 95.9FM,and then switch to 106.1FM for "Country Gospel" each week.

Whatever you do, do it as a prayer and 'lift it up' as a gift to God.  The 'talents' that God has given you, (teacher, carpenter, salesman, DJ. etc.) is God's gift to you, and what you do with those talents is your gift back to God.  Use your gifts wisely, for, at the end of this life, Jesus will want an accounting of how you used the gifts and talents that He gave you when He created you.

It's "CHRIST-mas" time right now, and I hope you'll be a 'bold' Christian and stand up for our right to say "MERRY CHRIST-mas" instead of "Seasons Greetings"... right?  The only reason that people want the politically correct "Seasons Greetings" or "Happy Holidays" is that "Merry CHRIST-mas" has the name of Christ in it... and Christ has been shaking things up for over 2,000 years now, because He is the only way to the Father.  Celebrate His birth this December, forcus on the Joy of Jesus and your Spirit will smile inside you.  I'm praying for you and I ask that you keep Mrs. Brady and me (and our children) in your daily prayers.  Thanks.
In His Love, Pastor Ed Brady
